Windforce 970 3X Fan Connector

I bought an eBay card with a damaged cooler, apparently the fans are screwed, I have a Windforce 770 with a knackered card but beautiful, silent fans, the 770 uses a 4-pin connector and I THINK the 3x cooler on the 970 uses the same (but I'm not too sure).

Can anyone possibly tell me if the 970 3x uses a 4-pin fan connector?

I would guess that they are both 4-pin fan connectors. I checked some of the replacement coolers, and they are 4-pin. But in the event that they are different, just cut the connector off of the old fans and splice it onto the replacement fan assembly.

I was thinking about splicing the fan connector if it didn't fit... would it be ok to do this do you think? the fans look very similar technically, would it be the same order of wires?

Sidenote, seems weird no one has seemingly photographed the PCB of the 3x versions...

Here is a webpage for Artic Accelero Xtreme IV GPU cooler. It is compatible with GTX 1070, 970, and 770. Whether it is compatible with the exact GPU model is unknown.

FYI, the Artic cooler has the pin-out for their cooler's 4-pin in the above link. It should be the same (it states compatibility with GTX 970 & GTX 770).

It should be a standard 4-PIN PWM configuration.

Aren't 4/3-pin PWM proprietary to CPU fans and other internal fans?

I found this... No. All of the replacement fans, CPU Coolers use the same configuration for 4-pin fan connectors (to my knowledge anyway). The same goes for 3-pin fan connectors. There may be some outliers out there, but it isn't the norm in the USA.

This is the card I've bought, looks like a 3-pin connector... if I do have to splice a cable, which cable am I getting rid of?

Oh actually, my fans from the 770 follow the same colour scheme as the Intel wires, and I assume control is the cutoff from the diagram, you have definitely assured me a lot on this replacement, thank you

Can you just write an answer saying they it has a 3-pin connector so I can pick you as the solution?

The #4 Control would be left out of the 3-pin connector. You can just tape it to the cable.

There are adapters for this. Basically you need the #1 ground and #2 5-12V to #1 & #2 on the 3_pin. You can also connect the Sensor #3 to #3, although I don't know for certain it will work the same. In other words it may be on 100%.

The 4-pin fan connector uses pulse width modulation to control the RPM of the fan. The 3-pin fan connector typically isn't variable, but the RPM can be controlled by varying the voltage. For instance many motherboard 4-pin fan headers are able to vary the RPM in either case.

Once it is installed give it a try. You may still be able to control the fan RPM. If not then you can order the appropriate OEM part or use an after market fan or cooler.

There are also inline adapters that reduce the 12v to 5 V for example. This would reduce the RPM o.f the fan

Hi Jordan, did you manage to replace the fans on your windforce GTX970? I have the same card and 2 of the fans need replacing, but I have no idea how to get the shroud off. If you managed it, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
