Windoes 98 won't change resolution/colour depth

I have a HP D530 and an Nvidia Riva TNT2 Model 64 from Ebay.

All loaded up with Win 98 and the 71.84 drivers (as suggested and detected) but it will NOT change to 256 bit colour so I cannot play/install any games.

Been at this for months now and no idea where else to turn. What can I do/try otherwise?

I have removed drivers for the monitor and graphics, tried safe mode and tried removing anything in Device Manager with a yellow mark.

To no avail. I would like to play my old games, thanks!

Specs: Win 98 SE, 256MB RAM (took a 256 stick out in case this caused the errors) Intel Celeron CPU 2.6Ghz I think.

did you installed chipset drivers for the motherboard?

is it 98 or 98se?

what mainboard?

did you installed and ran directx to see if it detects something it shouldn't be like a bad gpu driver?

98SE, just found the drivers on HP's site, as it's late now I will try again now, I thought they were installed via the disc, I bought it from EBay, stil sealed so it is genuine.
