Window 7 hangs at Welcome screen

So yesterday I was using my computer and it was working fine. I turned it off (like I do every night before bed). And when I turned it on again today it got stuck at the Welcome screen. I thought that maybe it was just a one time problem (most of my computer problems are) so I shut if off manually using the power button and the booted it back up again but it got stuck at the welcome screen again. So it is off now. This computer is homebuilt and it is almost 1 year old.

Specs:

i5 2400
AMD Radeon HD 6850
8GB RAM
Asus P8Z68-V Motherboard

Hmm i had that happened to me a few times before and a hard reset solved it for me. (sometimes i had to do it twice). Try booting up in safe mode.

Okay! I did it and it worked! I'm at my desktop in safe mode now.

Edit: Not sure if it is relevant, but I played GTAIV and GTAIV: Episodes from Liberty City yesterday. I know that those games have some issues on PC. It just seems weird that this would happen the day after I play GTAIV for the first time on my PC.

Edit2: I did a system restore to before I installed GTAIV and it worked. I guess the port is really as bad as everyone says it is. Thanks Azn Cracker for suggesting that I boot into safe mode.
