True, it rips audio files from cd to mp3's or wma, with wma being the default naturally enough as it's Microsoft's own.
You can change the default by opening Media Player, click on Tools, select Options from the drop down menu, then select the Rip Music tab and set rip options to mp3.

Jonmor68 - never tried media player to rip, i just might try it now and see how it works.

the best solution i've come across for this kind of situation is using

dbpoweramp

which allows for you to re-encode, or change format, or whatever you need when it comes to ripping media
