I am trying to update from Windows 10 to the Anniversary Update but my computer freezes at 1% progress. I have tried everything I can think of including: Unplugging all extra SATA drives except my main SSD, unplugging my wireless network adapter, unplugging all USB devices (even mouse and keyboard), and installing the update through a USB flash drive. It always gets to the same part and freezes until I shutdown my computer and lose no data.

You can see pictures of the frozen screen here: http://imgur.com/a/PseoH.

Hopefully someone can give me some guidance on how to fix this as i've tried everything I can think of. Thanks!

Specs:

Motherboard: Asus M5A97 R2.0
CPU: AMD FX-8320 (OC)
GPU: EVGA GTX 750 SC

I don't have an answer for you unfortunately, although I am encountering the exact same issue with a similar setup.

Here is my setup and details of what I've tried to get this working:

Fx 8320
Sabertooth 990fx rev 1
R9 270
2TB HDD W/350 GB free
Currently running win 10 pro build 10240

I've tried using media creation tool and a usb flash drive, windows 10 upgrade tool and regular windows update.

On my 15 or so attempts it always locks up on the working on updates screen, either at 1% or 0%, I've even left it like that overnight which made no difference. The circle stops and there is no HDD activity.

The furthest I've gotten was when I disabled all onboard devices, disabled windows firewall and defended, used clean boot, disabled...

Give a run through of all your installed software. If anything is particularly out of date, you should probably uninstall it.

I had Daemon Tools Pro 5, free with my motherboard, completely cripple explorer. Refused to run the installer so it sat there.

I suspect it is trying to remove something, and it is hanging endlessly waiting for some user input (Are you sure you want to uninstall X?) on some program that doesn't have a silent mode.

I have waited about 3 hours now but the screen is absolutely frozen and the spinny wheel has not moved at all in that time. There are no lights blinking on the motherboard or loud fans like there usually is during an update.

Ok, I'll look. I will also look in my BIOS settings and maybe reset them as i've messed with some such as Wake on LAN and stuff in the past. Thanks.

ANother update. I have a folder on my C: drive called "$WINDOWS.~BT -dix" which contains: "C:\$WINDOWS.~BT -dix\NewOS\Windows\WinSxS\Catalogs" and finally in "Catalogs" it has this file: "ed06fc4af7bbcc826eebc5f0b32ce5a35f74af95502928e585dd307181db67ab.cat". This is strange to me because it is dated on 8/15/2016, right around when I would have instigated the Anniversary Update for the first time. Anyone seen anything like this?

It attempted to create a new folder for the OS to go into, but since it failed its pretty much empty?
Look at my previous note and answer those questions.

OK, sorry for the delay. I have a Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD and it is fully updated with about 40GB free. I have also cleared out many old drivers and updated my new ones but the update still freezes at 1%, same as the original photo.

The furthest I've gotten was when I disabled all onboard devices, disabled windows firewall and defended, used clean boot, disabled all non-microsoft services, disabled all startup programs and unplugged all other usb devices including keyboard and mouse. This allowed me to reach a whopping 15% and 12% the two attemps that I've tried with the above setup. But then it just locks up and upon force restart reverts back to build 10240.

If you've made any progress please share it with us as this issue is infuriating!

Occasionally upon focre restart and reverting back I will get an error stating that the update failed in the safe_os apply_image stage.

Now that I see your setup I'm thinking maybe this is a motherboard bios issue.

Sorry about the wall of text just hoping someone on Tom's will have found a solution for this nightmare of an update.

Just thought I would update this thread in case anyone else runs into the same problem the OP and I had. I tried to update several more times via the windows 10 upgrade app and the media creation tool, it froze every time at zero or one percent during the working on updates phase of the installation.

The only way I was able to get the anniversary update installed was to do a wipe/clean installation via USB flash drive. Now onto restoring my 1.5TB of games and all my user data.

Not the best solution but it does work.
