Downloaded the Windows Tech Preview the other day and am rather disappointed. I know its not the final product but it appears they haven't really changed much over 8.1. As it appears so far all they did was add a start menu and the virtual desktop feature. Im not impressed, I was really hoping for some more innovation like the ability to download an os copy from the windows server if your pc fails (similiar to apple) or even a more integrated metro system (as their are still two ways to change preferences, the standard control panel way and the crappier metro way.) How do you guys feel about the update thus far, and what to do you want to see.

Also I don't know about you guys but all this cross device integration isn't very appealing as I have an android phone.

you can download the tech preview from: preview.windows.com

The OP is correct, there is little in the way of changes, they have basically done what they did with windows 7 after the massive vista fail, taken the aspects of a successful operation system, in this case being windows 7, underlayed them within the unsuccessful operating system (windows 8) and then added a feature or 2 to make it look new... and in this event, all they have done is incorporate a couple of programs that could be purchased for $5 each from Stardock (Start8 and Modernmix). So, yeah, it is a little unimpressive at the moment, but I am hoping that they add to it over the next year and make it a lot better than what it currently is.

Modern windows is based on NT and Windows XP was part of the NT 5 line of windows along with windows 2000. Windows vista was NT 6.0 and that is why it broke so much due to all the changes because it was a big leap that was in part due to how long it was in limbo. Then Windows 7 is NT 6.1, 8 is NT 6.2, 8.1 is NT 6.3 and now Windows 10 is NT 6.4.

I am glad it seems to fix a lot of stuff that 8/8.1 broke. Hope it fixes the cpu throttling bug for good or else it will still be a disappointment to me.

I just wish the OS would stop trying to shove online log in down my throat, steam is a pain as is and the last thing I want is an always online OS that happens to have an offline mode that maybe works if you win the lotto while landing on mars in your homemade spaceship. I hope google buys valve and then sells it for parts when they mess it up. Because valve ruined PC gaming and handed victory over to the PS3/XBOX with it's horrid DRM trash. I know it's why I stopped buying most PC games for many years.

I have a PS4 for games I want to play offline and without steams buggy trash GUI that is even worse than origin. If your worse than EA, then you must be trying really hard. Just really over the top hard to level over 9000. After civ 5 though I caved because it's clear there was nothing I could do about the injustice valve has done to the PC gaming market.

Yep I will be going my every 6 month reinstall of steam soon to help get rid of the crashes that origin and even u-play don't suffer from. Oh how I love the many GB that will be removed and installed once more because valve has it's head suck on making a crappy OS than fixing there in the dumps DRM. Oh wait they can't do no wrong so they don't ever need to bug fix anything or make half-life 3 because they are on valve never do jack time.

Maybe I will make one good game, some online store with sales all the time(But really just price match amazon at best) with a broken offline mode that's there for looks and then sit on my butt raking in the green stuff until I make a rip off OS using free ware that will never really leave beta because well it's all takes "time". My only mistake was not coming up with that before valve did.

Yes steam rubbed me wrong yet again when wanting to play for stuff I paid for. Oh well that's my fault for thinking they would ever fix it, because it is in fact valve time we are talking about here not any so called "reasonable persons time" or "Most big business's time tables".

If windows pulls a steam, I will quit windows and use Linux. That's all I have to say about the online account subject and I realize not liking the "cloud", valve, steam and stuff isn't the "in thing" to do but it's my 2 cents and if you disagree so be it. If any are offended, sorry but it's how I feel on the subject of an always online system type thing.

You bring up some really good points, I especially agree where you said you were not a fan of the cloud. I have been a long user of google drive and love it and like the ability to upload items manually a cloud seems like such an incovenience, because as you said I want to use my pc work offline and online.

I have only seen minor bugs and a few quirks, It seems to work and runs basically the same as I ran windows 8.1

I auto logon to the desktop the same as I configured windows 8.1, I don't use the windows store or metro apps, also the same as windows 8.1
attempting to install the NVidia drivers directly cause the video system to hang but recovered ok. some of the alternate desktop/task switching is ok but is a minor update. (virtual desktop would be nicer if I did not already have 3 monitors)

I just see it as windows 8.2 a minor update with a few bugs.

there are already various solutions to download a OS image and boot from if via the network. They have been around for a long time. I can even think of various solutions from the late 80's that did that. I guess now you could set up a pxe server, or any one of the other versions to boot from.
