hi guys, ive read the how to install windows 10 guide on this website ( http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2569562/install-windows.html ) and a few of the guides and i just have some questions before i get started.

  • ive just read this guide ( http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-3091512/clean-install-windows-upgrade.html )and im finding i cant find the file i need. theres no sources folder or x64 folder.

also im wondering if i can just make a microsoft account before i do the installation and if that will be quicker, and what it will change. i plan on basically doing this http://imgur.com/a/2Zgq5 after the install so im wondering if that will effect it.

Also im wondering if i should reset all my OCs on my video cards, memory and CPU?

if it helps i have the full version of windows 7 (not OEM) and still have my code from that, im wondering if i can just use that code and skip the guide

system specs just in case are

ASrock extreme6
i5-4670k
HD 7950 X2
samsung 250GB Evo
1TB wdblue
corsair HX750
corsair vengeance 2133

thankyou for help

I can't imagine why you would want to do that ... no advantage has ever been gained from upgrading an OS on the same hardware, outside of dismal failures like ME and Vista.

But if you are dead set on doing so ... just follow the tutorials on tenforums

http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html
http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/23354-clean-install-windows-10-directly-without-having-upgrade-first.html

thing is you know 7 is working well as ''you'' want . 10 cant say that at all and does as Microsoft wants you may find you wished you did not do it and be out 10 and 7 as well as a lot find out [opinion]

if you want to try it get a new hard drive and a retail disk and keep it away from your 7 install that way if it fails to work as you expect then remove the 10 drive and hook your 7 drive back up and yoiur still good on it no loss

lot of risk with 10 and 7 can be not so easy to get back after the fact

Do a fresh install of W10 with your W7 key.

First make a USB install drive with the media creation tool from MS.

Get the latest drivers from here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25165/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST-RAID-Driver?product=55005
File: f6flpy-x64.zip. Unzip it to a folder on a USB drive(it can be teh one with windows on it).

Disconnect all teh drives except your SSD then, go into the BIOS and under "boot" disable CSM and enable "secure boot".

Start the install and when it asks where to install hit "have disk" and point it to the folder you put the above files in.

then hit shift +f10 then:
diskpart
list disk
select disk x(x beeing the drive you are installing to)
clean
convert gpt
exit
exit

then hit refresh and select "create" to make a partition for windows as big as you require it. windows will create several partitions and auto-select the proper one to install to.

WARNING: this will erase all partitions and data on the SSD(duh!) :)

EDIT: Ignore the luddites :)

What on earth are you talking about? The 7 license gets turned into 8 after a month of activating 10. And why would 10 "fail" anyway?
Fun fact: OP has a gaming GPU on that build. So how would he play the DX12 games coming out if he's on W7?

eula says 30 days and Microsoft is so un trustworthy over 10 not worth any of the risk and as easy as it is for 10 to go wrong , no way

new hard drive and a retail disk copy . would not put my well working with out issue 7 at risk over crap 10 . got to be crazy

'he play the DX12 games coming out if he's on W7 ?? like in 5 or 10 years it maybe mainstream enough to worry about

sad thing is old windows vista was better received and liked over this 10 now that's when you know its bad

anyway do as ''you'' want and good luck

ok im a bit confused at the moment. ive read through the replies and the gist im getting is that.

1. if i clean install win10 with my win7 full edition, i will loose 7 permanently and then be stuck with windows 10
2. that CPUs older then skylake are horrible for win10
3. no advantage has ever been gained by upgrading OS on the same hardware.
4. windows 7 cant be easy to get back after clean installing win 10 on the same drive
5. "Get the latest drivers from here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25165/Intel-R...
File: f6flpy-x64.zip. Unzip it to a folder on a USB drive(it can be teh one with windows on it).

let me say this though, my PC is primarily a gaming PC, as such the upgrade to win10 is inevitable and and im not too concerned about loosing data. Also if i can get it for free, then im going to. im wondering if this will turn my win7 full edition into a win 10 OEM....or something like that.

just looking for clarification.

It will indeed turn your win 7 retail into win 10 OEM and lock it to your MB, but only after 30 days pass from activating W10.

1. see above
2. utter fallacy. W10 supports some features in skylake that other OSs don;t and never will, but not the other way around. W10 works great on older hardware. I'm on Ivy myself.
3. utter idiocy. It's faster, more stable and secure and less resource intensive OS. Ofcourse there are advantages to upgrading.
4. it's as easy as doing a fresh install of W7 within the said 30 days. That being said, you will neither have any reason to do that, nor is it in any way viable as a gamer to do it because of DX12(the dude that posted above has no idea what he's talking about: DX12 exclusive games are coming as early as this holiday season)

i still dont know what this step was for

The original links you have are both accurate and cover everything you want to do.
They the Scorched Earth one just has you turn things off during/after setup, and the guide gets you started.
It includes things like Paritioning a drive (dividing a single hard disk into smaller portions, i.e. turning a 1TB drive into Two 500GB drives), but you probably don't want to do that.

You probably should reset your OCs to stock and then after windows is installed and setup you can OC them again, or use software like MSI Afterburner or Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to do it.

The guide doesn't mention anything about needing any files besides a Windows 10 Install Disc/USB, you can create one using this:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

When it asks for a key/serial number, you can use your Windows 7 key. And you can use it to install Windows 10 on any new computers you build.

You only have until like mid-july to do it though, as after that the free upgrade period will end and all remaining windows 7/8 keys will be stuck that way forever.

And yes you can create a microsoft account before hand. (it won't help speed things up much/at all)
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/account

by this do you mean have until mid july to get the free windows 10, or only have until then to be able to reinstall on any new computers you build?

or will it not be like a windows 10 OEM?

thanks for answer.

also what is this for https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25165/Intel-R

should i not use the one on my mobo page? http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z87%20Extreme6/?cat=Download&os=Win1064

For the free Upgrade from a qualifying OS, it needs to be installed and activated before July 29 2016.

If you bought a boxed version of Windows 7 (retail) it will become Windows 10 Retail (not OEM).

That's for Raiding (combining) hard drives. You do it for increased storage space/backing up your data. You don't need it. Either of them.

so,

1. reset OCs (just in case)
2. do what guides say
3, done

is there anything i need to do to ensure my win10 is full version. minus having locked mobo correct, or could i upgrade cpu/mobo after 30 days

Unfortuntely, upgrading ANY version of Windows for free to W10 ties the license to the motherboard. Theres nothing you can do about that.

You can install W10 without teh driver i linked, but you will ahve to install it afterwards for the best SATA transfer speeds and it will contain some bloatware. So it's best to do it from the start. And yes, teh one from INtel is better than the one from you MB manufacturer.

Everything you need to do is listed in the steps i recommended, and, yes, you have to do the diskpart stuff in order to get the best boot times.

You do not need the Intel RST Drivers unless you're using a PCIE storage device (m.2 SSD for example, or those big Intel PCIE SSDs) or trying to raid your hard drives.

Windows being "tied to your motherboard" is just how MS identifies your version of Windows as legit, after you upgrade your retail key you can keep using it.

This explains the different methods of activating windows 10: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12440/windows-10-activation

Run some benchmarks on a good SSD like the 850 EVO on the default Sata drivers windows 10 comes with and teh latesrt Intel RST and then reassess the need for such drivers :)

Last time i cheked, the debate was heated but the relative consensus was that your updated 10 license is permanently tied to your MB. Time to look again into this, i guess. Though, for all intents and purposes, you should be correct. A retail license is, after all, a retail license.

2. someone in here said Win 10 only works well on Skylake. Nope, that is not right, it will in fact work perfectly fine on your PC as Win 10 was released before Skylake (or close anyway) and No way Microsoft release a OS with such a requirement. Win 10 works fine on any PC made in last 5 years, before that it becomes an issue of how well hardware manufacturers support their hardware.

I know your CPU will work as its the little brother of my own.

You may have issues running DX 12 on HD 7950 since they aren't DX 12 cards
