Windows 10 crashes & freezes after replacing CPU

I'm having lots of crashes, freezes and BSOD's, such as SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED and SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION.

My pc started freezing regularly, starting this summer when I was replacing my CPU cooler. I accidentally damaged my CPU and replaced it another of the same type. First I thought it was an overheating problem, but the crashes don't just occur when I'm doing CPU intensive work, and the temps never seem to go above 50.

I recently tried to format and reinstall Windows, but to no avail. Now I don't only get freezes but also Blue Screens. Before I formatted my hard drive, I had a partition with Linux, and I can't remember ever having any problems when running that. It could be that the problems I'm encountering now are completely unrelated to the ones I had before.

As far as I know, all drivers are up to date. On Asus's website some drivers didn't appear when I select windows 10, so I installed the windows 8 version, is that OK? I have also performed memory tests without any result.

If you can run Linux fine then it seems to rule out an actual hardware problem, because if it was hardware then I would expect Linux to have its equivalent issues with it. As such, I would suspect a software issue at heart.

The general advice is update drivers (even from those two links), so a thorough check of the devices you have installed might be necessary.

With the Windows 8 drivers did you install them in compatibility mode? I would fear conflicts otherwise. And from what I could find, ASUS does have Windows 10, 32-bit and 64-bit, drivers available. It is the UK site which pops up though.

I would not rule out any hardware problems just yet. I was not using Linux that often, and it might just be that I was lucky never to encounter a crash while using it.

Not all drivers are available for Windows 10 on Asus's website. Most are, but not chipset and sata drivers. I did not install the those W8 drivers in compatibility mode, how can I do that? Are there tools can I use to find out what drivers I have and which ones need to be updated? The Windows Device Manager does not seem to display the correct information.

Compatibility mode: Right click on the file, choose 'properties'. Pop up appears, and there should be a compatibility tab with the options. Obviously only use if there is no Windows 10 equivalent.

One of the second batch of dumps points to dxgkrnl.sys which is something through Windows update.

Incidentally, which version of Windows 10 are you on? I had a ton of blue screens (for no apparent reason such as things are) and ended up performing an inplace upgrade to the Anniversary version. All blue screens I had are gone. In the search bar type 'winver' to start the process of checking.

Edit: on sizzling's ASUS link there is also a hotfix in addition to the stability updates.

I updated to the latest BIOS version and it hasn't crashed since. I still want to wait some more days to see if it's all fixed, but right now it seems to be OK!
