Hello guys,

I'm hoping somebody can shed some light on my issue. I have a computer I put together myself and upgraded to windows. I was originally on Win 8.1 64 bit and I did a clean install to Win 10 Pro 64bit. The problem I have is that it randomly black screen and I get this loud noise coming from the speakers. I have to literally do a hard reset to get it to come back up. It's almost like when a display driver fails but it never recovers. I didn't have any problems until I added a 3rd monitor. If anybody has any ideas what could be the cause please lend me your opinions. If i'm missing any other specs please let me know. The only error I get in event viewer is "unexpected shutdown".

Specs:
MOBO - Asus Sabertooth Z77
CPU- Intel Xeon 1290v2 no OC @3.7Ghz and a 4.1Ghz boost with stock cooler.
Ram - 16GB (4x4gig of Samsung DDR3 1600mhz)
Graphics - MSI R9 390 using Crimson 16.3.1 driver clean install
Power Supply - Corsair CX750M 750 watts
SSD - Samsung Pro 512GB
HDD 1 - Samsung Barracuda 500GB(Storage)
HDD 2 - Toshiba 500GB (Storage)
Optical - TSSTcorp DVD+-RW
LCD 1 - Samsung S24C450 via display port
LCD 2 - Samsung S24C450 via DVI
LCD 3 - Acer S240HL via DVI

Solution
My issue turned out to be my R9 390 was bad. I had it RMA'd and yet to have any more issue with it. The issue you might be having is with the hardware acceleration. Go to chrome>settings>advance settings>uncheck "Use hardware acceleration when available".
Hi,

Please do try doing a clean install of the AMD graphics card driver that may actually solve the problem.
- First, do run Windows Update and make sure to install all updates available.
- Observe the PC after the update and see if the same problem will persist or not.
- If it will, proceed with uninstalling the AMD graphics driver from Device manager.
- Next is to open Programs and Features as well and uninstall anything related to AMD.
- Once done, download and install the latest driver.
- Here's the link: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download
- Reboot your PC once the latest driver has been installed.
- Do test it again after the reboot and see if the same problem will persist or not.

Yes I do. I thought it was google chrome causing it but it's not as I removed chrome and it still crashes. I really think it's my power supply. newegg's power supply calculator calls for a 724 watt power supply and I only have a 750 watt bronze rated power supply. I have a new 1000 watt platinum rated and a new aftermarket heat sink coming as I'm still using the stock xeon heat sink.

Ok so I have an update. I upgraded to a EVGA 1000 watt 80+ platinum power supply and a Thermaltake NIC C5 heat sink. I also updated my graphics driver to the Crimson 16.3.1 driver. The issue still happens. I ran Prime95's In-Place Large FFTs test for 3 hours without the graphics driver installed along with 1 monitor and the computer never died. I also removed all accessories such as all fans(except cpu fan), the optical drive, the 2 extra hard drives. It's when I reinstall the Crimson driver is when it will just randomly shut off. I know in the past Asus AI suite and MSI afterburner would cause things like this, but Asus claims those issue were resolved. I am literally out of ideas. The only thing I can think is maybe to remove these programs and go from there. I wonder if I need to RMA my MSI R9 390 card. I ran Kombustor for 2 hours and not one time did it turn off though. It seems to only do it when the card is not under a decent load and when I'm just watching Youtube and just browsing the web. I turn Hardware acceleration off in Google Chrome and it didn't change anything. I re-imaged this computer 3 times with Windows 10 pro 64bit and I still get this random shutdown. The only error I get in event viewer is Kernal Power error. I also ran DDU driver removal tool and installed 16.3.1 again but it will still randomly shut down. It really seems to only do it when the computer is at less than a moderate to full load. I am literally out of ideas on this one.

Was the error dated for a time before or after you swapped power... its just, that error points at a power problem still: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/46250-63-random-restarts-critical-kernel-power-event-task.

what surge protector are you using? it could even be that... it seems unlikely two power supplies suffer same thing.

I don't run ai suite, it auto overclocked my pc when i installed it last time.

the crimson drivers used to fry cards, as far as I can tell they don't now. the shutdowns start as soon as they are loaded so there is something there, Contact MSI about it and ask them?

It happened after I installed the new power supply. I agree two power supplies with the same issue is highly unlikely. It literally only happens when google chrome is running youtube. I really love chrome but i'm think there's a bug in google chrome that I'm experiencing right now. I reinstalled chrome a couple of days ago with a fresh download of it as well. I now have AI suite, afterburner and coretemp uninstalled now. I wonder if there was a conflict between those 3 programs though.

Now that I think of it. I never really had any problems until I installed my 3rd monitor. Could that be the issue? I have 1 via DP, and 2 via DVI. All monitors are running at 1920x1080. Can this card run 3 monitors?

this problem looks like it needs professional help. I don't know that much about hardware, i just search for solutions... I don't know what is causing this and if you saw thread I linked to, its happened for years so I am at a loss as to explain it. Need someone to test all the parts and figure out what is cause. It might even be the motherboard still, maybe the old psu fried something on it.

If it runs fine on two monitors, use that. Did you ever use 3 on your last gpu?

its 4am, i have to crash. Surely someone else here can assist you :)

I don't know, the range of cards that appear to work with one another is fairly limited.

This doesn't even include the 390: http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/Crossfire-Chart.aspx

I don't think you can, I did find the 7470 as a secondary card but only in the 7 series chart. I think they need to be in same series to play together, and even then the slower card just brings the fast one down to its level when it comes to average performance.

I believe I found the problem. I installed just the ati HD 7470 after removing everything AMD using DDU software. The 7470 uses a completely different driver though. I was on computer for many hours without any issue. So the problem is either with the R9's driver or the card itself. The only way to find out is to RMA the card and wait for it to return. Thank you all for your help in this matter as you all have been a great help. I will report back once I receive the card back from MSI in a couple of weeks. Thank you.

It could be either. oh looky here: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2875398/amd-crimson-black-screen-catalyst-crashing.html

I ran Prime95's In-Place Large FFTs test for 3 hours without the graphics driver installed along with 1 monitor and the computer never died
- it could still just be the drivers

Does the 390 work with the drivers for the 7970 or does it have to use Crimson?

Are you running 3 monitors now?

I hope I am wrong above and the replacement is all you need. I remember replacing my speakers a few weeks ago and wondering, will this fix the problem.

The 7470 uses a legacy driver and i normally use 3 monitors but it will still black screen even with 1 monitor. Although when I use MSI Gaming App and set the card to gaming mode or OC mode, the card doesn't crash. So with that said I think maybe the card is having an issue with the speed stepping technology either within the card or driver.

Any news? I have the same issue. Computer crashes when I'm using chrome, but with edge browser it works fine. What could it be?
