Windows 10 download broke my PC

I was downloading the free upgrade to Windows 10 yesterday when my computer froze. So I manually turned it off. When I turned it back on I got the blue screen of death and it said I had no operating system on my PC. When I spoke to Windows support they told me to just reinstall the 8.1 operating system from the DVD. Now that I've done that I'm able to log on and use the computer but it is EXTREMELY slow and freezes almost every few minutes. I'm unable to play a game or download anything too intensive. My brother built me this comp 1 year ago and it's quite powerful (runs all games at ultra settings). What could be the issue? Any ideas or advice would be great. Thanks.
