When ever I put my laptop to sleep (closing my laptop) it goes to sleep normally. But the problem is when I open my laptop to use it, the second monitor becomes the main monitor and the laptop's built in monitor stops working and the detect monitor doesn't show the laptop monitor. I have found that restarting my laptop is the ONLY way to fix this which is annoying considering it takes 5 minutes for my laptop to boot up completely.

I have tried unplugging the second monitor, putting it to sleep then waking it up and plugging the second monitor back in, but then it doesn't detect the second monitor.

I have tried putting my laptop to sleep, unplugging the second monitor, waking my laptop up, then plugging it back in, but again, it doesn't detect.

I have tried a bunch of other methods as well and can't find anything that works.

I have a G75V laptop from Asus (Republic of Gamers). Intel i7-3630QM 2.4Ghz, NVidia GeForce GTX 670M, and 12 GB of ram. My monitor is a Samsung (which is kind of irrelevant because I've tried different monitors which all do the same thing).

What is this fix that Windows released? I know this problem occurs for me.

Same issue, second monitor does not wake up after my displays shut off while idling.

Nvidia driver 359.00, WinX x64, GTX660 SC x2 in SLI

I post this here because it comes out on top of Google out of a gazillion threads.

Idem: I tried new drivers, various combinations of display settings/windows settings, pulling out cables, rebootting, changing refresh rates, resolution, changing every little power saving setting, switching from both windows as well as intel util, etc... nothing worked. Or better said: sometimes it seems to work once by pulling out the powercable of the monitor (....) and pushing it in again, but that only seems to work once.

I found however one workaround that works each time:

- I put the monitor on main display only (laptop only)
- I wait until the light on the monitor goes to orange and then wait at least 10 minutes (earlier it will not work, if I change immediately after it turns orange it will show the display for a second and then dissapear)
- Then I active multiple monitors mode again via graphic properties > multiple displays
- Now it works and the image does not dissapear

For those Googling: found this thread also interesting: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3909r1/warning_for_those_thinking_of_upgrading_windows/ I read there that KB3081438 should have solved the problem for Windows 10 but in my case it clearly did not. So hope Microsoft will release another KB to permanently solve this.

For NVidia: i have read several threads on stackexchange that nvidia driver update might solve this (but i have the plain Intel Graphics so rely on 8.15.10.2900).

I'm also thinking on when the problem started to occur. I remember that after installing Windows 10 it did not seem to occur. So in theory i would have to install Windows 10 blanco again and see if it occurs. Maybe it was triggered by changing power saving settings or maybe by a KB that was published automatically that caused it. Would have to do more root cause analysis onto that. But when i notice the behaviour there is some timing involved, maybe caching of something, maybe something that keeps track of minutes past in relation to power saving settings (all on maximum performance). My theory is that Windows/Driver thinks it needs to bring the second monitor to sleep. So even when it is activated (again) it will keep this state and does not clear this state. So maybe it is a matter of finding out where it keeps track of this state. Since rebooting does not work it seems it must be kept somewhere permananent.
