Hello,

Just upgraded to the free windows 10 from 8.1, unable to find the product key for windows 10. Does microsoft send you a product key in case you need to reset your computer and it is past the free 1 year upgrade? If so, where do I find it?

Thank you

If your computer came stock with windows 8 than the product key is in the bios, you shouldn't have to worry about the product key. Windows will automatically detect it when you reset it or do a clean install or what ever, even after the 1 year upgrade deadline.

But if you want to have a copy of the product key, then use this http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

I use this, it's easy, and you don't have to install anything. I put it on a thumb drive and use it on all my computers.
Just download the zip file, extract it, then run the app.

You can discover your Wn 10 license key via Belarc Advisor.

However...the license key is of far less need than it used to be. From a system that was Upgraded, a reinstall, on the same hardware, will not need a license key entry. Your system info (motherboard) is also part of that license. A reinstall does not need the license to activate it. Your Upgraded system talks to the activation servers, and ends up activated.

Now...if you change hardware (motherboard), all bets are off.

If you upgraded from a legit windows 8.1 copy, you shouldn't need to enter a new product key at all. It should do it automatically during the upgrade process.

Check by pressing Windows key + Pause break key and seeing if it says 'windows is activated'.

If for some reason it isn't, you should be able to contact microsoft with your legit Win 8.1 key and they will sort it out since you are entitled for the upgrade.
