windows 10 local area connection doesn't have a valid ip

Hi, I've had Windows 10 installed and working for months now but all of a sudden I lost internet connectivity and after troubleshooting, I got the message "local area connection doesn't have a valid ip". I followed a link to a previous thread here http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2741270/windows-local-area-connection-valid-internet-error.html?584a6e15dd950=reload and this fixes the problem. However, every time I restart the PC I have to go through the same steps to fix. Any ideas?

How do you get online? Wireless? Ethernet cable? If ethernet the cable maybe the prob

Ethernet - I've swapped out the cable and it's not resolved.

set a static IP address and you should be good.
the article linked above is how to ask the DHCP server for a valid IP address. You do not have to live with a dynamic IP address.
go to a command prompt and ipconfig after you have fixed it. make note of the numbers, write them down.
in control panel open the network and sharing center or whatever 10 calls it and look for the adapter properties. find the IPV4 highlight it and click on properties. you will want to copy the ip address, subnet mask and default gateway from the ipconfig to the boxes here. once all three have been setup click apply.
When you reboot now instead of asking what the IP address is and failing like every previous boot, it will have the address from the get go.
