Solution
As stated above, Mail keeps altering my password. I enter the correct 8 character password, and Mail insists on changing it to 16 characters. Here is a screenshot of the correct 8 character password I enter:

But when I go back to verify, Mail has changed it back to 16 characters as shown here:

What the heck is happening, and does anyone have this issue too? How do I fix it?
Is there an actual problem or is it just that there are more characters? Some programs shorten or extend the number of stars to hide the true password length.

so you are getting mail error? or just it showing 16 ***?
Not exactly. when it goes to get mail, the "working" animation just runs continuously. I never get mail even when I know there is some. Same issue when I send. No error msg. other than an occasional "your mail settings are outdated".

Previously, I inadvertently uninstalled Calendar. I guess Mail got uninstalled at the same time. So I went to the MS site and downloaded the package anew. Since then, this issue has shown up.Maybe I downloaded the wrong Mail pgm. I noticed that the set up was totally unfamiliar. I'll do a new uninstall and clean-up. Then try again.

What website did you install it from? The Mail and Calendar apps should only be installed from the Microsoft Store that is built-in to your computer. If you downloaded it from an unofficial website, your account could be at risk.

if you have password issue. it would have error right away.
sound like it doesn't have the right mail settings for whatever mail service you use
I still don't know what happened, but after I deleted the account, rebooted, and added the account back, everything worked normal. So... problem solved.

I'll assume I must have entered something incorrectly.
