Hi,

I installed a new Samsung QVO 1TB SSD and windows is only showing that it has free space of 930gb. There is nothing on this ssd. I've already played around with it in disk management but i cant get it to read the full TB or at least close to it. Also, my other hard drive and ssd isn't displaying the correct total space either?

Does anyone know why this is and where the missing space has gone?

Thanks :)

A drive advertised as "1TB" is read by Windows as "931GB".
This is absolutely normal and to be expected.

You've lost nothing...nothing is missing.

This is with ALL drive storage. It is a difference in units.
Base 10 vs Base 2
Human vs computer

A 2TB drive reads as 1.81TB
1TB reads as 931GB
500GB reads as 432GB.
etc, etc.

There was even a lawsuit abut this a decade ago. Hence tiny wording on the box the drive came in, telling you this.

This question has been coming up since I remember my first hard drive which was a 20MB one almost 40 years ago, still causing confusion.

Wonder if the old punch-hole card users had the same issue? Hey Bill, this card has 60 holes but should have 63 holes. Ah yes, you lose 3 holes due to formatting. hehe.
