Hello, I've been trying to upgrade on the lga 1366 platform from an i7 920 to an x5680. I flashed the bios and the correct information shows up and i can navigate freely in the bios. when i boot up to windows 10, everything is stable untill I try to play videos or launch an intensive operation, and it restarts randomly as well. I can boot into safe mode using shift restart and tried to reinstall windows 10. however it always freezes during the beginning of the process and nothing happens. I tried this with a x5650 a year ago, same result. is there a way I can reboot/freshly re-install windows another way?

Solution

Reset the BIOS by clearing the CMOS.
-There is a clear CMOS button on the back panel.
or
Remove the CMOS battery:
-Turn off your computer and unplug the power cord.
-Press the power button for 15 minutes
-Remove the battery and wait 5 minutes.
-Place the battery back.
-Plug in...

Which motherboard do you have?

sorry for the delay, mother board is a Gigabyte ga-ex58-ud3r . I am aware that the chip isn't officially supported on this motherboard. But its recognized so I assume its something else maybe

It could be something else, but it could also be the result of using non-approve CPU.
Heat could cause the issue and another hardware that could cause a similar issue is a PSU.
Check your system temps at idle and load using either HWMonitor or HWMonitor or Core Temp
A PSU might work just fine when browsing and performing basic tasks but when the system is loaded with intensive tasks a unreliable PSU might not be able to handle the power load.
Could you post your system components?

components are:

Corsair 600 Watt CX600 80+ Power Supply

8GB DDR3 1333MHz (4 X 2GB)

500gb Western Digital caviar blue Hard Drive

Cooler Master Geminii M4 cpu cooler

Rx 580 OC 8Gb

Gigabyte ga-x58a-ud3r motherbomy temps are at around 32C idle and dont get past 35C before crashing, so its not overheating. I do think its my bios, as i just flashed it with several versions with each having various levels of success, the newest one seems the most stable

Solution
sorry for the delay, thanks for the reply. I reset the cmos using the battery method. I reset the computer and this came up

and the line at the bottom blinks and I cant continue to windows. also sometimes it doesn't say success. it first said "checking Dram" then it restarted. but that stops when I re-inserted the ram. I can still boot to the bios fine

Do you see the boot disk in the BIOS?
If you don't then check the disk cable connections (SATA and power) or try another SATA port.
Does the boot device order list in the BIOS shows your disk or Windows Boot Manager?
Also, try one stick of RAM and see.

If everything was fine before the CPU upgrade, then that could be the issue.

the sata cables were disconnected, thanks. So i booted up windows and it was fine, but the cpu was clocked to 2.00GHZ. After raising the multiplier and the voltage, the system is stable at 3.7ghz. it crashes sometimes but its solid at 3.5ghz. thanks for the help

That's great. I'm glad you system is stable and you are able to run the 6 core @ 3.5GHz. Keep an eye on temps.

If that solve your issue, you should click the 'Pick as the solution' green button, so others will know they might be able to upgrade to that CPU even if is not listed.
