Windows 10 Product key after install?

So I am currently running windows 8.1 and want to upgrade to windows 10 but I have just one concern. If i upgrade from 8.1 to 10 without purchasing windows 10 from a store and my computer HDD crashes or i need to reinstall windows 10, where would you get a product key? Meaning you update from 8.1 to 10 like you did with 8 to 8.1
