Hello. I am trying to install windows 10 and when it goes to install it gives the error code 0xc1900101 - 0x20017 and says not enough RAMdisk. I have 8gb of ram though. Then i tried installing it from a flash drive and it said that it could not be installed on either of my 2 drives because they were in a different partition format. I have no knowledge when it comes to hard drives.,.. please help me out with this! (if i do the flash drive install i will have to buy another copy of win and will not be able to use my free upgrade)

the problem is i dont even know what RAM disk is. What i have read is that it is ram that is set aside to act as a hard drive. How would you even install/uninstall? I'm newer to this part of computers.

8GB should definitely be enough. I ran the upgrade for Windows 10 on my first gen Surface Pro by mounting the ISO file from within Windows 8.1, and the first gen SP only has 4GB of ram.

I would check and make sure that nothing else is running while you are trying to do the upgrade. Close out EVERYTHING not essential to the operation of Windows, including your firewall/AV software. enough ram should be freed up to let it run.

The install from flash drive won't nullify your free upgrade though, just don't boot from the flash drive to do the install. Write the copy of Windows 10 to the flash drive, and then run setup from there. You can tell Windows setup to do an in-place upgrade, which works the same as using the Get Windows 10 app, or the mounted ISO method.

i have gone through and complete cleaned out both my drives of all the crap i had. All im running now is the basic drivers. when i tried to install it from the flash drive it said that the OS could not be installed on either of my drives because the partition format (or just format... i cant remember exactly) is it possible that these drives are just to old?

Further research into this issue shows a pattern of users needing to set their UEFI console to boot the machine using UEFI only (the Compatibility Service Module, or CSM - needs to be turned off). If you need help finding that setting for your system, please post the brand of system (if you bought a name brand system) and the model number, or the brand and model number of your motherboard specifically if you or a friend built the box custom. Once we know that, we'll be able to help you find the setting that needs to change.

Gigabyte LGA 1150 Intel B85M-D3H is the motherboard.

What you told me to do didn't work. The selections were there but when i did what you said the drives were no longer being detected and sent me straight to the bios. then when i tried to put my flash drive in to bot from there it just sat at the logo screen. I set everything back to the way it was then tried to boot from the flashdrive again. I got to selecting which drive i wanted to put the OS on but i got the same problem for both of them...

"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks."

I am at a total loss and have no clue what to do at this point.

Unfortunately from everything I have read so far, converting a boot volume from MBR to GPT won't work, rendering it unbootable. Your best option would be to back up your data, wipe out the drive and then convert it to GPT, reinstall Windows 7 or 8.1, and do the upgrade to Windows 10 from there once 7 or 8.1 is activated again.
