I'm trying to solve a friend's Lenovo Yoga 2 system which will not fully boot. (No data is backed up. There are no original system disks or files for Windows 8.1). He updated the netbook using the free online Windows 10 upgrade and it worked fine and I'm not sure what he did.

Since I am running Windows 10 on my desktop and a laptop and netbook, could I create a recovery USB drive / file for his system? This is the first time I've worked on a SSD and don't want to lose his data if possible. To enter his system, upon boot I get the following screen which requires a password which I have: STS500LT032-1E9142 LOCK. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes you can! In fact you can follow this tutorial to create a bootable usb installer if you are concerned something might get botched. You can also go through this tutorial on how to backup Windows 10. Likewise you can try and look through this page for more info.

The only difference with SSD's and HDD's is the former is faster and has TRIM support based off of flash memory where as the latter is slower and is on a platter. You're fine to go ahead with your recovery/backup process.

Now if you are trying to diagnose the no boot issue then try performing sfc / scannow and see if it helps.

You can also try and reinstall the drivers for your friends Yoga by downloading them here i.e after you boot into your OS.
