Hi all,
I only have this issue on one of my partitions.. the others are fine. The default size of the taskbar is.. one level.. but I have raised mine up to 2 levels.. ..the only problem is.. that is doesn’t always stay that way.. when I boot up again. It MAY or MAY NOT be the same size as I set it.. its not consistent. I have tried locking the taskbar and that doesn’t matter.. it still will revert at times to one level. Then another time. I will reboot and its back to 2 levels.. so there has to be some registry setting corrupted or missing for it to change … so can someone tell me maybe what setting I need to check or what entry I can use in the registry for it to default to the level I have adjusted it to?? Thanks in advance,..

Hi, after reading [this], [this page], and the last 3 paragraphs [here], it appears to be a Windows bug. One person on the 2nd link used a 3rd party program that automatically saves and restores Windows positions and sizes to fix their problem. I have not tested that software so I can't recommend it.

Something else you can do is to try to create a new Windows User Account and see if the problem exists in that new account. If not, then it's possibly something in your account (registry or otherwise) that is causing the problem and you can copy your info to the new user account if needed. Be sure to...

Be sure to make the new User Account have Administrator permissions if that's how you normally use your PC. I feel this is unlikely to help because it's a known Windows bug but I guess it's worth a try.

Similar problems here since Creator update:

Fixed double height taskbar - Fine
Auto-hide single height taskbar - Fine
Auto-hide double height taskbar - Not fine, will not stick after a reboot.

Lock or unlock taskbar makes no difference

Can't be that difficult to get this to work 🙁

Hi harv91, I just tried this on my test system and it did remember auto-hide for a double sized taskbar for me. However, dj3642a said the behavior was inconsistent, so maybe I just got lucky trying it out 2 times and having it work both times. Try temporarily disabling your anti-virus, make the changes that you want, then re-enabling your anti-virus. Sometimes security software will prevent some system changes from being saved.

Also since it probably was (and maybe still is) a Windows bug, it may not have been fixed. If that is the problem, then there is nothing you can do but either wait for a fix from Microsoft, or use 3rd party software to create a "work-around" fix if possible.

I recommend starting a new thread as this one is rather old. Go [here] and fully explain your question and you're likely to get better help.

Thanks for replying gardenman

Crazy thing is it was fine until Creator update, then it stopped working.
Not running anti-virus on the affected PC so that's not the issue.
It's not a deal breaker, but just annoying, must be stored in the registry but can't find any useful info on the keys affected.

Will wait forever if it's a Windows bug, so need to delve further.

Just in case this is useful to anyone, my problem was that I had a 'New Toolbar' added, and have had it for many years. Since the Creator update it seems the addition of the toolbar prevents you having an Auto-hiding multi-line toolbar. The setting is never remembered after a reboot.

Works OK if I remove my 'New Toolbar'

It's been doing this since Day One for me as an Insider. I've left feedback at least 3-4 times...

The first solution here https://www.itechtics.com/2-ways-disable-settings-windows-10-taskbar/ fixed this problem for me.

In reply to my post above, upon digging further in the Group Policy Editor, I enabled "prevent users from resizing the taskbar" and that also worked. This is less limiting than the option in my reply above.

I agree, the link provided should be fully read before trying it out as it will disable other Taskbar options, maybe autohide and lock.

Also the Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) is only available on Win 10 Pro. However the page does provide information for disabling the settings through the registry. Always [backup the registry] if you decide to edit it.
