Hi, about 5 times over the past 3 years I've had this problem but simply restarting my router hasn't worked this time. I've tried ipconfig /renew and /release but release has a bunch of numbers and renew literally does nothing (nothing comes up). Any answers are greatly appreciated

Solution
You have a invalid ip address. 169 is the telltale sign. You you have this connected directly into your router? What is your router product name?

90% of home routers use 192.168.1.1 as their default gateway, your ip should be very similar to this.

I would recommend opening your network adapters (ncpa.cpl in run box to bring it up) double click on your local area connection then select properties. select internet protocol version 4 then select properties.

Most likely its set to optain ip address automatically. Check the "use the following ip address" bubble

Type it in like this

IP address : 192.168.1.111
subnetmask : 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.1.1

This will make your dns also be manually selected
i'd recommend...

After rebooting there is still no connection - I typed ipconfig /release and i got an error:

"An error occurred while releasing interface Ethernet : an address has not yet been associated with network endpoint".

I haven't seen this message before btw

i'd recommend using google dns
type it in as follows
Primary dns server: 8.8.8.8
secondary dns server : 8.8.4.4.

with 90% of home routers this will fix the problem, You may have a belkin router, in which for default gateway and your ip address the schema should change to
192.168.2.1 << default gateway
192.168.2.110 <<ip address
255.255.255.0 << Subnet mask.

Hope this helps!

Just a fyi this is in some ways a temporary fix. if you say had to move your equipment to a new location and plug in at work or at a friends this setup may not work, 90% of users want a dynamic ip address, or the "automatic" that we had changed from.

We still haven't figured out the underlying cause of why it assigned you a 169 address. But i would recommend updating your local area connection adapter through device manager. But this task should be very easy now that you are connected to the internet. Just post back if you want to troubleshoot further.

Good luck in your endeavors.

@Adamm07x I'm hoping you're still available to help me. I've been on multiple forums and tried many solutions. Tried a system restore, uninstalling network drivers and restarting computer, as well as all the solutions in this article [https://whatsabyte.com/windows/fix-ethernet-doesnt-have-a-valid-ip-configuration-error-in-windows/]. I tried your solution and finally seemed to be getting somewhere but now I'm getting "The default gateway is not available".. Tried restarting my modem like Windows suggested but again got this gateway error... Also ipconfig says that the "Media disconnected" and I couldn't find any helpful articles about that... I don't run McAfee.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
