Windows 10 Unsupported Directory

My Windows 8.1 Pro won't let me just "upgrade" to Windows 10. It says it has to uninstall all programs and reset all settings. The installer says "You can't keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps because your current version might be installed in an unsupported directory." I would like to keep my settings and apps, but it's okay if I don't. But when I ran Windows 10 as a bootable ISO it said my key would not work and I checked it several times. It's a copy of Windows 8.1 I got from Dreamspark. I'm scared that if I clean install Windows 10 it won't keep my key. Any suggestions?

Your 8.1 key won't work until you have 1 successful upgrade to 10.
