Windows 10 upgrade from 7, does this generate a new key?

I recently upgraded my desktop rig at home from windows 7 to windows 10. I originally had the windows 7 builders disk. I recently acquired a decommissioned laptop from work that was completely wiped clean. Right now I'm using it with a non-activated version of the windows 10 install iso and so far so good.

My question is twofold: When I upgraded my win 7 to 10, was I generated a windows 10 specific key to replace my existing windows 7 key? IF that is the case, is it possible to use the old windows 7 key to activate the non-activated version on the laptop?

I have a feeling that will not be the case, but there were a lot of things that weren't 100% clear during the win10 rollout so I just wanted to double check.

Thanks!

Hi gibbey,

1) Yes, you got a new Windows 10 key during your upgrade

2) No, you can't use your old Windows 7 key on the new laptop, you'll need to buy a new license.

Your old key, while decommissioned, is still linked to your new Windows 10 key and using it on a different machine will flag both the Windows 7 AND Windows 10 key.
