I just got a new SSD for Christmas and I want to finally install it. I still have not used my Windows 10 upgrade, but I want the W10 on the new SSD.

Can this be done? If so, how?

Solution

Of course it can be done.

Leave your computer on during the night. With the internet on. Allow Windows 10 to upgrade ON THE HARD DRIVE.

Done that? Use DriveImage XML http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm to clone your HDD to SSD.

Note that DriveImage XML is not the most beautiful program out there. If you want a perfect app, you'd need to pay for something like acronis.

I prefer doing the upgrade on HDD, because SSDs have limited Writes.

However, you will run into activation issues. You need to first upgrade your computer, then do clean install, because Microsoft changed the way Windows 10 is activated.
