Will I be able to download the Windows 10 update and burn it to DVD or something for later installations just like MS allowed us all to do with manual service pack downloads? That was so handy! I'd never abandon Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 without a real means to reinstall Windows 10 after that 1 year time period expires.

The short answer is, we don't know for sure because Microsoft hasn't announced anything yet (at least as far as I'm aware).

However, the whole reason Microsoft is offering the free transition with a time period, is because they WANT everyone (or as close to as they can get) to migrate to Windows10. They want program developers to embrace their vision for universal apps and developers will only bother to do that if enough of their market supports it (i.e. runs Win10). I really don't think Microsoft are trying to trick anyone here, they really need programs... and for that they need fast Win10 takeup.

So while I don't know for sure, I'd be surprised and disappointed if Microsoft didn't make it easy, including providing ISOs. You...

You can already download Win8 ISOs with an appropriate key, I can't see what benefit there would be in making it more difficult for Win10. It looks to me like they're doing everything they can to get everyone to upgrade to Win10.

You won't have to re-install Windows 10 after a year. You only pay for Windows 10 if you didn't get it within the year time frame. If you do get windows 10 in that year period you will get free updates for the life of the machine.

No one that installed Windows 10 within the year time frame will have to reinstall automatically after the year The year is ONLY the time frame to purchase/install for free not for Windows 10 to stop working or move to a subscription

I reinstall Windows every 6 months. The question was, can I download Windows 10 to media storage so I can do this

1. Why every 6 months?
2. Probably, almost to a certainty.

Good, I would hope so. I am anal about things. Reinstalling Windows every 6-9 months keep my systems running very fast and with fewer OS errors/crashes. I've always used old computers though so it may not be an issue anymore when I get the x99 system I want. My current laptop is 8 years old and I swear it crashes constantly if I run Windows update. But for some reason when updating causes a million issues, reinstalling Windows on a wiped HDD with latest updates is smooth as silk. I have yet to understand why this is

fewer OS errors/crashes.

I don't know what you're doing with yours, but my Win 8, then upgraded to 8.1 has 'crashed' exactly zero times.

But yes, they pretty much have to give a path to install media. Not every PC is connected to the internet, and drives crash. There needs to be some way to install offline.

The stability issues are odd, but an SSD completely fixes the issues with prolonged boot times (and an unresponsive computer for minutes after log on) that plague mechanical drives.

Make sure you get yourself an SSD in your new system and you'll probably find you never have to reinstall.
