Hi everyone,

I was trying to avoid at all costs to re-install Windows to avoid cleaning my drive. so. .

Back story: Yesterday I tried to flash the newer version of my BIOS firmware, but rather than using a separate USB stick I added the file in the C:\ and installed it from there.

Other odd thing: My NVMe SSD does not show on the boot order as an option in my BIOS, even though my BIOS can still identify it.

Issue: My desktop now won't boot, it just stays on a endless black screen, restarting over and over, but I can access the BIOS and I can use a USB stick Windows installer.

Troubleshoot already tried and result messages I received from command prompts:
  1. bootrec /fixmbr - Operation completed successfully
  2. bootrec /fixboot - Element not found
  3. bootrec /scanos - Completeled successfully - The scan identified 0 Windows installations
  4. bootrec /rebuildbcd - Same as number 3
Other troubleshoot done: I also tried some commands using diskpart to fix "Element not found" issue but it didn't work, I also noticed I can't access bcdedit command gives me an error saying something about there's more devices indistinguishable.

Could someone shine some light please?

Thanks

I manage to boot into Windows! Pressing F11 it gave me to choose which disk I wanted to boot from I found the 990PRo and it just booted normally
But the problem still persists, if I don't press F11 I won't be able to boot into Windows
Do you have multiple drives installed?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

We're going to need more context. When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model.

What BIOS version were you on and what BIOS version did you try flashing to?

but rather than using a separate USB stick I added the file in the C:\ and installed it from there.
You might want to se if you can get into Safe Mode and delete the file that you've placed in C: . As stated prior, we're going to need more info.

I have updated my post to reflect the specs.

Don't know which BIOS version I had, when I reset the CMOS (with the jumper) it doesn't seem to go back to the previous version.
The one I installed was this one, 7C56vAJ1(Beta version).

I don't think I can boot in safe mode, is there a key I should hit while booting? The only thing I can boot into so far is the BIOS by pressing Delete or if I put a usb stick I can boot into the installer and go to troubleshooting mode. I tried to delete the file of the firmware update through CMD but it doesn't let me.

After BIOS update - BIOS settings get reset to defaults.
Your system probably is trying to boot into legacy mode, but windows was installed in UEFI mode.
This will result in black screen with blinking underscore symbol.

Make sure SATA controller is set to AHCI mode.
Disable Secure Boot.
Make sure UEFI boot is enabled.
Set first boot device to Windows Boot Manager.

I just double checked the bios settings see below

"Make sure SATA controller is set to AHCI mode" - Is there a way to check this through the bios or using the USB stick with the installer? I can't boot into Windows in any way or shape
"Disable Secure Boot." - It's already disabled
Make sure UEFI boot is enabled. - also enabled
Set first boot device to Windows Boot Manager. - When I am in the BIOS, the nvme doesn't show as a boot option anywhere. Even the USB stick shows up as an uption with its name.

I ended up re-installing Windows 11. I managed somehow to now boot as normal but the sleep option was not coming up. As at the end I was able to back up the docs I needed I just decided to install it fresh.

Thanks everyone, not really sure between cmos clears, and reinstalling firmware where did this go wrong but clearly updating the firmware won't be in my plans any time soon.

Edit: Not sure how can I put this under "Solved"
