Does anyone have an opinion on whether Win2K is an acceptable gaming platform. Obviously, games are only a small part of what goes on with my PC, but I've heard some rumors that Win2K might not be ideal for that.

This post should go into the Software -> Windows 2000 section.

And, as far as I know, Win2K runs games fine. (Unlike NT4.) It's all a matter of having updated drivers though. And Win2k has some conflicts with VIA chipsets and/or AMD chips.

Actually I discovered that W2k may be the only option for internet gaming with DX DirectPlay using ICS/NAT. (atleast for the server)

That makes a lot of sense.

Win9x OSs don't have very good networking functionality. And NT4 doesn't seem to run games well. So Win2K seems to be the most likely platform for such a thing, being an excellent mesh of Win9x and NT.

I run win2k exclusively now. You may have some issues with older games but I have not seen any problems with the latest releases. However there is a slight performance hit but I think that is more of a driver issue. If you dont mind mucking around in your system or scouring the web for patches and specific drivers then Win2k is less likely to freeze up your entire system.

Still, some companies still won't support win2k, EA is a large one that still doesn't. They are being flamed big time by a lot of people so that will change soon but you never know.

True! I forgot about that, EA sucks. I cant play NHL 2k in hardware mode. EA games only can do software rendering in win2k. Well maybe you should think about dual booting. But I cant stand the windows 9x stuff so it's not a option for me.

anything that tries to talk to the hardware directly will fail uder W2K cos it has teh same abstraction layer as NT4(W2k was alpha'd as NT5)

Ahh, direct hardware calls is the problem. I didn't know that.

I use Win2k pro. I have an ATI 128 16mb video card, 160mb ram. I run Delta Force, Delta Force Land Warrior, MS Combat Flight Simulator and Nascar 3. They all work very well. Win2k utilizes memory better than Win98, which hogs and then will not let go. I also run a TV tuner from Happauge and it runs without a hitch. I am very pleased with Win2k as a gaming platform. I have played all of these games over the network too, without a problem. The only problems I have had is with Internet gaming. I have to manually open the ports in my router and firewall.

using 3dmark 2000

UT runs at 8 fps 1024x768x32 w2k all op high
UT runs at 55 fps 1024x768x32 w98 all op high

with the newest drivers and updates

Err Discard the above poast, i dont beleive it's accurate.

I had:
P3-700@933
390 sdram
ASUS 64mg GeForce v6600(256)
default: 120 core 166mem mine: 139core 199mem
Asus CUV4x Motherboard

Win98SE
Quake 3 Arena: on average 1024 16bit, bilinear
120.4fps on patch 1.17g benchmark demo 1

3D Mark 2000 v1.0: 5253

After upgradeing to win 2 useing all latest drivers same clocking setup

Quake 3 Arena: Due to the v1.27g patch demos could not be used. But my observation notices an average of 10fps loss in arena performance (manageble)

3D Mark 2000 v1.1: 4974
Allot of reports have shown that the update v1.1 has increased accuracy on the 3dmark BUT compareing to the version 1.0 it has reduced the mark by raughly 150

thus win2k decreased 3dmark score by about 150
also quite manageble.

there is only one problem with win2k Pro, it runs most of the things in D3D which is VERY irritateing because OpengL is so much better.

Ahh well hope SP2 fixes this.

Win2k is great had no warries with it... i am currently running ASUS a7v133 kt133a mobo and a 1.2Ghz athlon C have had no problems with windows 2000 at all ...

Yet.
