Hi All,

Thanks very for your replies to my previous question regarding Win 2K Server
back-up. Its appreciated. Please excuse my continued ignorance but would
appreciate if you could answer one more query I have.

If say I have something like MS SQL or any another program such as MS Office
on the machine and its backed up using Win 2K server back up utility if
recovery is needed would it put the program execution icons back on the
recovered machine or would it only return the files from the hard disk. I am
trying to understand whether it would recover the files only from the hard
disk or would it also recover the programs and software loaded on the machine
such as MS Office as well.

Thanks in advance once again.

Regards,

DRTP

The backup utility will backup everything you select, but can not backup active
files that are opened for exclusive access.

The backup will capture icons, which are just themselves small files in your profile
tree, as well as Microsoft Office program files and anything else in the selection list.
Just not exclusive-open files. You should review the backup log to see what is
being missed: There will be a few files such as DHCP temp files and such that
really won't matter in a restore scenario, but you need to check each one. Of course
be sure to backup "system state" which is vital for any disaster recovery situation.

SQL Server needs to be backed up specially, as the mdf/ldf database files are
normally locked open all the time by the SQL Server engine. The simplest way to
do this is to schedule a SQL management task to create a SQL backup file
periodically - daily for example - and these files will then be captured on the
regular backup. If you don't need the SQL engine running during the backup,
you can write a script that stops and restarts the SQL service to allow the backup
to capture the database and logfiles directly.

It needs to be noted that for any decent business-class backup, you need better software
than the bundled MS Backup. This stuff is all overpriced IMO (the major backup programs
now list at more than the operating system they run on), but still in all they pay for
themselves the first time you really need them.

The file backup part would backup any files, the SQL part
would backup SQL server and the system state would backup
the registry and stuff. Theoretically, if you restore
everything from a full backup you would restore everything.

Of course you would need to install a base system first, to
run the restore on.

Cliff
