I am currently running on a 32-bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate, and I want to upgrade to 64-bit. I know you can do this if you have both 32 and 64-bit installation CDs, but in my case, the 32-bit version I have was given to me on a burned CD(by a programmer friend who owns their own programming company) and I do not have the 64-bit CD. Now if I were to re-buy Windows 7 Home and install the 64-bit version what problems may I run into?(because I know there will be problems, it can't be that easy) And how can I avoid running into these problems? Any help will be much appreciated!

Also, I am planning on buying an SSD, if I install 64-bit on this drive can I just boot from the SSD without removing the 32-bit version from my HDD?

Solution
by buying a Win 7 Ultimate upgrade OS. the Upgrade OS comes with both disks 32 and 64 bit, new windows key and the only issues you will run in to is updating drivers to 64 bit drivers.

If you get Win 7 Home Premium you will need to do a fresh install. There will be no way around this. This means you will need to back up all the info you want to save.

If you are only planing on installing the 64bit OS on the ssd there will be no issues but setting the boot priority in both the bios and in windows. IF you plan on putting the 64 bit OS on the HDD you will run into major issues because you would be using 2 different versions of win 7, Ultimate and Home premium. If you were to use a 64bit version of Ultimate then there would very little issues as long as you got the upgrade version.

I figured as much if I installed to an SSD, but I can't yet afford both 64-bit Windows and an SSD. How can I avoid problems when installing on the HDD?
