No it's not. Windows 8 is faster overall(on the desktop, at various tasks), for gaming both are usually equal. Some games, such as Battlefield 4, run MUCH better on Windows 8/8.1

If they are the same price, there is NO REASON to get Windows 7. Most driver problems have been solved with 8, and the start screen/lack of start menu isn't an issue once you get used to it. I think it's actually better. If you really like the start menu, you can install a program to make it look like it used to. Windows 8 will also be supported long and will support Direct X 12, while 7 likely won't. 7 was and still is a great operating system, but if you are getting one today, no reason not to get 8.

For some reason windows 8 allows me to overclock my 8320 to insane freqs (5.2-5.5 at times) and is much more stable when oc'ing my crossfire setup.. As for gaming I've noticed little to no improvement.

I have Windows 7 and I'm happy with it, but if I was getting a new OS I might go for 8.1. Most of the problems have been fixed, so DX12 support makes it worthwhile.

Other than that, they're pretty much identical for games though. In a few games Windows 7 is 2-3 fps faster, in some games Windows 8 is 2-3 fps faster. They both seem to be equally compatible with old games.

Windows 8 is less of a performance hog as far as compared to Windows 7. Is Windows 7 slow? No it is still very fast I have it. I would get Windows 7 for gaming because more games are optimized for it. Although if your a die hard Battlefield fan then get Windows 8 because it works better on there. But I hate windows 8's design. I would say just get Windows 7. You get more games optimized for it,much better interface,sometimes software only works on windows 7 and not 8 and you get Windows XP which is just a Virtual machine. You can run windows XP for free at NO charge inside of Windows 7. It runs as it's own Operating System. It's offered by Microsoft themselves free of charge. In the end I recccomend Windows 7

Wouldn't even bother chasing DX12 yet you'd be wasting your money, time and effort.

I'm not "chasing" anything. Windows 7 and 8 are virtually identical when it comes to games, so since they cost the same picking the one that's certain to support DX12 for a new system is a viable option. Though the still-crap interface of Windows 8 will prevent me from actually 'upgrading'.

I was just speaking more generally, I've come across a number of people who seem to think having the very latest DX hardware is the be all and end all to be able to play games when in actual fact most games will still be pervious gen DX compatible otherwise there would be a huge lack of sales. For example BF4 is supported from DX10.1 - so DX11 is still here for some time to come.

But yes, you are right about DX11 being around for a while. You still see the occasional dx9 game even.
