Windows 7 as a NAS server?

Right now I have a spare box (Athlon 3200+, 2gb RAM, 7200gs, Antec Sonata III case) that I've been experimenting with using as a NAS. Tried it with Ubuntu + Webmin, and with a spare copy of XP. I prefer simple GUIs and really all I do is use is to share files between my Macs and PCs.

For some reason when I leave it in XP, it keeps rebooting... and Ubuntu won't start, something got corrupted (been using 24/7 since January). I think the hardware is all fine, but ugh.

Anyway, thinking of wiping it clean and putting on Windows 7 Pro to use as a NAS server (I can get it cheap for $30 as a student). How do you think this will work for my needs, sharing to both OSX and Windows systems?

I think if you have a problem preventing XP and Ubunto from working properly, then you will certainly not fix anything by installing Win 7.
