Windows 7 Backup failing

I am trying to backup my system (C drive) and using Windows Backup and Restore to do so to create a system image on an external hard drive.

My C drive is partitioned at 100gb of which I'm using about 90gb. I have chosen external drives with 200-300gb free space on which to store the backup. However each time I try and run Backup (which tells me it will require 95gb of space) it fails after less than a minute with an error stating that "There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location."

I'm not understanding what is going on here. I have 2-3 times the space needed to perform the backup and yet it fails for lack of space. What is going on?

Try using one of these programs then:

WD drives: Acronis True Image Free
Seageage: Seagate Disc Wizard

Both are actually the same program found at the support site (works even if you attach a USB drive and it recognized a WD or Seagate). You can do a manual, compressed backup.

At 90GB it depends on how much is Pagefile, Hiberfil and non-compressable data but I'd guess at maybe 40GB for the backup.

Thank you, this was highly informative and is apparently concerned with exactly my problem.Unfortunately for me, running fsutil deletejournal did not work and my needed 50mb of free space on the system partition cannot be claimed.
