When i plug in a plug&play device such as USB sound adapters or USB headsets that don't have drivers from the manufacturer Windows update will start looking for the driver but then fail. I have automatic download/installation of drivers with Windows Update turned on. I am pretty sure these devices should be compatible with my machine since they work fine on other machines with Windows 7.

i suspect that some part of Windows Update is broken but i have not been able to find anything on this from searches i have done

I you did a fresh download of windows 7 iso on a usb stick to be installed you may look in to this

'', Microsoft is removing support for the EHCI host controller (USB 2.0 spec) and keeping only the xHCI host controller spec (also known as the universal USB 3.0 specification). While the USB 3.0 spec is backward compatible with most USB 2.0 and 1.0 functions, installing windows 7 via USB will not be one of them (source: EXPReview).''

so Microsoft has removed things from there new / downloaded win-7 that may affect usb use [it was ment to affect the use of 7 on skylake but I assume it affects everything as well ?

not using 10? well now your being punished [opinion]

yes

if i understand what you are saying, its that you can't install windows 7 via usb on new hardware? in that case thats not the issue i am having since this is an install that is a few years old on 2011 hardware

that's cool then - lot of stuff like that don't really have drivers to get and work just on built in to windows default drivers ..

thing is as well ven if you use the device manager and use ''update driver'' it may just show and say best driver is all ready being used ,, all you then can do is go to the devices manufacture support page and manually find and download any driver they offer and you think you want or need

the number one rule for me and Microsoft /windows is never allow auto updating inspect and review each update before its downloaded or installed first .. you may get something you really don't want or you now got something that could cause this issue as well [opinion]

you should list the devices you cant get/find drivers for so we could look it over some to see ??
