I got the above message and I'm not sure what to make of it. I searched for the error message online and tried to follow troubleshooting help but, to be honest, the answers I've found were all above my head and targeted towards specific situations that I'm not sure my case falls under.

I recently got a used computer and it appeared to be dual boot; it had both Vista and Windows 7 as options on boot up. The Windows 7 option requested a serial key and it seemed like the installation process had been stopped prematurely but the Vista option worked normally. I had a copy of Windows 7 so I booted it from the disk and did a custom install. There was no partition for the Windows 7 I had seen, there was only a partition for Vista, so I chose to format and install on the Vista partition.
The installation process went smoothly, I got to 100%, it rebooted once or twice, and then when I reached the final step I got the following message:

"Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."

Please keep in mind that although I'm very familiar with technology and computers this is the first time I've ever tried to install an OS. I just put in the boot disk and followed the instructions on the screen. Any help would be much appreciated. If you need any more information from me please let me know and I'll get it for you ASAP. This is really frustrating; I'm in the middle of a move and things seem to be going wrong with the most inconvenient of timing :\

Thank you TheDarkSide. You're solution worked for me. As it turns out, the first time I formatted it somehow missed a couple kb. How that makes any sense is beyond me but when I formatted the partition and second time and then tried to install again it worked flawlessly.
Thanks again, TheDarkSide.

When you are installing the new OS, you will have an advanced options choice. Click that and in the next window click the format icon once. Now finish the installation. I had the exact same issue and the answer cost me $50.00 from a pc tech. Hope it helps you and anyone else with this issue.
