Windows 7 data transfer

i have a computer which is very laggy with games. i just bought a new gaming desktop for everything. i need to move EVERYTHING from the slower computer to the new one. both computers are running windows 7. i am planning on using a crossover cable. is this possible? do i need 3rd party software? do the computers have to be plugged up to a router or can they be directly connected through the RJ45 port (ethernet)? is there a faster way without using removable media? please send all info possible. thanks!

When you write EVERYTHING does that include programs ? You won't be able to simply copy the complete drive contents to another computer and expect everything to work as it did.

If you are good at following directions it would be possible to create an image of the old hard drive and restore to the new computer. However, depending on what type of license you have for windows 7 you may need to contact Microsoft to have an authentic version on the new PC.

You could use a crossover cable as if you statically assign the TCP/IP settings on both computers, use apipa, or use a router with dhcp enabled to transfer files and data.

when i said everything, i meant the general stuff (files, settings, stuff on desktop, etc.) and i have authentic copies of windows on both computers. also, creating an image of te old is a BIG NO NO, the specs are very different, my comuter would read everything like the old one. but, i will try what you said to try. thanks!

OK, was not quite clear of your intentions. Sure, don't do a backup or create an image, just reload all programs, set up a network (either direct cable or wiith a router) and copy away.
