Windows 7 Desktop and Windows 8.1 laptop/notebook: How can I network share with a Homegroup

I cannot get my laptop computers connected to my Homegroup. my laptop says windows no longer detects a homegroup on this network. Is it because my desk top is older?

When I ran Windows 7 on my desktop and laptop, there were all kinds of problems getting a homegroup to work. Sometimes it would work, but often times not. Then I upgraded both the desktop and laptop to Windows 8 and the homegroup has worked flawlessly the whole time. Because of my experience, I would say that you will need to upgrade all of your devices to Windows 8 if you want the homegroup to be reliable.
