Hello,

So this is my problem. And to note, I would not be asking this question unless all the other posts about this subject were unhelpful.

My friend wanted to do a clean install of his windows 7. We put in the windows 7 recovery disk, and went about a custom install.

He has a SSD and a HDD. He wants all windows files onto his SSD, which he wants as a boot drive.

I go and format/delete all partitions until I'm left with only the HDD and SSD, unaltered. Their type is blank.

Boot up into Win 7. I go to my computer, and only the SSD is showing. However, the BIOS and disk management all show both drives connected.

I've tried to follow advice where I attempt to "clean" the disk through "diskpart" in the cmd console, but it doesn't work - it tells me:

"DISKPART> clean

Virtual Disk Service error:
Clean is not allowed on the disk containing the current boot,
system, pagefile, crashdump or hibernation volume."

So, I found out that while installing windows, majority of the important startup files (boot, primary partition, etc.) went to the SSD, while the HDD is marked "system". I attempt to transfer these system files to the SSD through bcdboot, but again, another error. I was unable to make the move.

____________

So, now I'm stuck. For any advice, I am willing to clean install my friend's PC as many times as possible to solve this.

I was thinking of doing a one drive install (just SSD), but I'd like to format and wipe the HDD. This is done during the windows clean install process - but there is no option to shut down from the "select drive to install windows" menu so I can safely eject the HDD; I'd also prefer not to manually shut down the PC during this setup for any problems that might occur.

Please help! How do I get windows to recognize my HDD, and preferably, have all windows files (including "system") onto my SSD?

Thank you.

Hi there KrS96,

You weren't able to clean the HDD due to the fact that you performed the OS installation while both drives were attached.
You need to take the HDD out of the system and install OS on the SSD.
After that, you can attach the HDD and reformat it. In case the HDD is healthy, your HDD should appear and work just fine.
