Windows 7 eats up disk space

I had ALL space used up on my C drvice, but when I looked at the folders they only added up to less
than 15 percent of the total partition size. The folder sizes did not reflect the sizes of files within.

Then I looked at WIndows\temp. There were HUGE files eating up the disk space. Apparently they don't get deleted when you reboot, I had to delete them manually.

One file was > 180 GIGAbytes in size, more than 60 percent of the partition.

Is there a way to prevent a recurrence?

What are the names of the temp files that were so large? More applications than just Windows use that folder - I just checked mine (on a PC I've used daily for years and that hasn't been rebooted in a month) and it's about 379 MB. (Win 7)

The files were nonsensical files with HEX names, 20 or 30 characters long. So it looks like they were generated by the OS.

I scanned the system with an AV package, it couldn't find anything suspicious.

Run combofix. It is the best tool to find and eliminate the worst viruses and other crap. If it will find a lot of stuff on your PC, run it a couple more times.

+ disable windows restore, run disk cleanup, check registry and other usual stuff (best free soft for this is ccleaner)

After some further digging, I finally isolated the problem. I was using MYBOOK to back up files on both computers.
It was creating the huge files. I had to shut down the MYBOOK process in order to get rid of the temp files.

I still don't know the purpose of those files. But if you use the WD product, look in Windows/temp and see if they are present.
