Windows 7 freezes after startup but is fine after system restore in safe mode. Then it freezes again upon startup.... I've disabled automatic updates and cleared any pending windows updates in the 'downloads' directory, but the problem still persists. I've tried a virus scan and the online Microsoft malicious software removal tool. Any ideas?

Probably a bad or corrupt third-party driver which you've recently installed. Try to recall which third-party driver you installed last and remove it.

It may also be some third-party software which you've recently installed, software which installs a driver. This can be antivirus software, a third-party firewall, or even CD/DVD burning software. Again, if that rings any bells with you, uninstall it.

Thanks for the tips. I had not installed any new software, but AVG security scan must have updated itself. I've uninstalled it and it seems to have done the trick. Many thanks....

Thanks also for the protection advice. Just installed it. Everything working fine now.
