WINDOWS 7, hard drive flashes once per second

WINDOWS 7, hard drive flashes once per second and hard drive is running all the time for days now. Have eliminated everything I can think of that could cause this, but on it goes. Any ideas? Thanks.

What does your task manager show?

A clean reboot and a look at tasks reveals all the activity is Microsoft based and activity occurs every second in svchost.exe, WmPrvSE.exe and dwm.exe.
