My windows 7 pc (hp not even a year old) shows is has only 12.9 GB free of 455 GB windir stat on (Administrator) says that i have 189.7 GB free include to recovery partition and HP: tools. no hidden directories that I can find, no reason for it to say it is full, my computer is not slow like it would be if the hard drive was full. i have defragmented checked my recycle bin, read numerous posts on this website, I cant find a solution

The win dir stat program should scan everything for that, because it looks at every file on the hard drive. including the recovery partition which is where the restore points are stored I believe. I'm fairly certain my problem is that the device thinks its full even though it is not. however if you have extra suggestions on how to ensure I don't have an overload of temp files etc. you are more than welcome to suggest

Nope, the restore points are not in the recovery partition. Most programs do not read those hidden system files. To check it out, look at the total space that you have from the program and from the Windows Explorer, then open a admin level command prompt (right click and select run as admin) and type the following:

powercfg -h off (you can aways turn hibernation back on)

Then restart and check your space available again.

I have rerun the scan after typing in the command but nothing has changed. Also when typed in the command it did not inform me that anything changed, I double checked the command so I know I inputted it correctly

Glad to hear that you found it before you were out of space. Your best bet is to delete all the old restore points and then give it a more limited amount of space for restore points, over time they can fill your entire drive if given the chance. :)
