windows 7 keeps restarting after I hit shutdown

Hi I am using windows 7 ,my mobo is asus p8z68-m pro .
my computer keeps restarting after shut-down ,but after i reset the bios the pc shuts down properly for 2-3 times but again it keeps restarting.please help.

Try reinstalling the network adapter and then going into it's device manager properties and disabling it's "wake on lan" and also it's "allow the computer to turn this device off" features.

I'd also see if there is a newer device driver available for it on the motherboard product page.

What is your BIOS version? If it's older than version 4003 I'd suggest you install the latest version which can be downloaded at the following link. Restart issues are not uncommon with buggy BIOS versions and that motherboard has had a pretty fair number of system stability BIOS updates so it's highly likely updating to a newer version will end your troubles. If you already have version 4003 I'd suggest unplugging the power supply from the wall, removing the CMOS battery and pressing the power button for 30 seconds then reinstall the CMOS battery, plug the unit back in and restart the system to test it out. You may need to reset your BIOS settings if you've changed any from the default values previously.

I'm not sure what you mean by removed the battery and "cleaned" the bios.

So you updated to the newest BIOS version, restarted after updating, and the problem was still happening?

So then you unplugged the unit from power, removed the cmos battery, pressed the power button for 30 seconds, reinstalled the cmos battery, plugged the unit back into the wall and the computer won't power on now?


Did you mean "cleared" the bios?

Where on the motherboard is the red light and is it flashing or solid?

sorry for my earlier post the pc was not starting up because the rams are not set properly,now its ok pc is starting up properly but still when i try to shut-down it restarts after 3/4 second.

I already updated the bios .
reset the bios
reinstalled the OS.
unchecked wake up on lan or any usb device
nothing worked.
now whenever I have to shut-down the pc I have to switch off the power supply from the back .
When ever I switch on the back psu switch ite pc starts I dont have to press the power button.

Well, that's a pretty darn good PSU so it's possible it's the PSU, but it's a lot less likely than if you had a cheapo model.

Try booting into Safe mode and see if it will shut down normally from safe mode. To access safe mode power on the computer and press F8 until the advanced boot menu appears and choose safe mode. Once in safe mode, allow the desktop to fully load and then choose shut down. If it shuts down normally five or six times like this then we know it's a software issue and not hardware.

already tried the safe mode,even in safe mode this thing happens every time ,if i reset the bios from the switch in MB only for the first 2/3 times the pc shutsdown properly then again it keeps restarting.

Try disconnecting the two wires coming from the front power button of the case to the motherboard then briefly touching those two pin together (Not the wires, the pins the wires were on) on the motherboard to start the unit up and then try to shut down once you're fully in windows to see if perhaps there is a problem with the front power switch that's causing the issue.

ok I tried ,I removed the power and the reset button and shutdown the pc by shorting the two pins now it takes longer time to restart after shutdown,if it was restarting after 4/5 second after shutdown now its 15/20 second.

No, I didn't want you to shut it down that way, just start it that way. Shut down normally from windows.

You know, just for giggles, go into Control panel power options, on the left side click on "choose what the power buttons do" and make sure that it's set to "when I press the power button"="shut down" and "when I press the sleep button=sleep. I don't think it's related but just make sure.

If none of that works, reconnect the wires from the front panel and try this:


This could be down to the AutoReboot setting kicking in.

1. Click Start > Run and type REGEDIT

2. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
then System
then CurrenControlSet
then Control
then CrashControl

3. Double-click on AutoReboot on the right side panel and change the value from 1 to 0.

Close regedit and restart the computer. Now the computer should shut down normally instead of restarting.

No, you want it to be 0. If it was already 0 then that wasn't the problem. I'd change it back to 0 or we'll never figure it out. I've got to go take care of some service calls but I'll try to help figure this out some more when I get back later.
