I installed a 240gb kingston ssd today, cloned my old HDD, which I removed all but 90gb of data from. I started the computer, went into the BIOS settings and changed it to the 1st slot in the priority list, but it's not booting from there, its booting from the old hard drive. The computer still works fine, it recognizes the SSD as a drive on windows explorer, but it won't start from there. I tried disabling the HDD as a boot item in the list, but it then could not find any drive with windows on it.

Solution
what software did you use? i think it did not cloned the drive properly. you could try paragon OS to SSD http://www.paragon-software.com/technologies/components/migrate-OS-to-SSD/
A fresh clan install is the preferred method of installing the operating system, applications, and utilities.

Cloning utilities work reasonably well but sometimes glitches develop.

I suggest you perform a secure erase which will make your ssd like new again. Then do a fresh clean install.

I used EaseUS Todo Backup, there is a clone option on the program.

Edit: decided to get the paragon software, worked wonderfully.
