My computer is not downloading updates. Windows 7 SP1. It just says Downloading updates....still at 0% after 30 min. Updates were around 2.1 gb or something.

Solution
I fixed it without doing anything special except download and install the Office updates first, which worked first time, and then download the critical updates, which hanged a while, but worked after.
Thats seems like how Microsoft is saying screw yea get windows 10 (they trying to genocide windows 7 & 8). There might be a better reason but that sounds most likey. Try canceling and re downloading. How much space do you have left?

I have plenty of space. I only have windows and programs on the ssd. And I tried canceling and starting it again and no go. I also can't change the windows update settings, and my account is an admin.

that's all fine as long as your willing to accept all the updates you normally refuse / decline as said another ploy to insure you get all them windows 10 and telemetry and botched ones in one big package

ya I'd avoided that service pack ''roll over'' update like the plague

windows 8.1 updates quickly as did that to a laptop til I found out some of the almost 900 infections while fixed screwed up windows so loaded win7 sp1. took about 24 hrs straight from time I started the updates I had selected before all where downloaded & installed.

As I have stated already there is none of the win 10 update stuff in that roll-up. Please stop spreading that paranoia since you clearly have not used it nor looked to see what it does and does not do.

The telemetry updates are there but not the get win 10 malware. You can believe me who has already installed it a bunch of times on various systems. Or believe the baseless rants of a clear Windows hater.

What if one of the component pieces of an update rollup crashes some systems? What if one of the components includes suspected "snooping" or "Win10 update" components that some Win 7 or 8.1 customers don't want?

At this point, we don't know. [and you never will ]

What concerns me most about KB 3125574 is that we don't have a definitive list of which KB patches are included in the uber-patch [so why is that ?? what are they hiding ??]

thing is as well as that you cant uninstall individual updates with in the whole roll up all you can uninstall is the whole roll up and then you back to square one ?

just not worth it just on microsofts sneaky windows 10 strong arming .. i'l,l wait a week on one at a time and weed them out as I go . decline and hide

good luck

''As I have stated already have stated already there is none of the win 10 update stuff in that roll-up''

show me where you see this ?? sure it not under your radar ?? I'm not falling for it if there not showing you all the files involved you don't know jack and then who are you ?? we all know its about tricking you in to the 10 worms

I guess to each his own

there is a point where your 'help" stops being useful and rolls into trolling territory. i'm pretty sure we're over that line now.

you're solution to "i can't update manually" is to update manually. good idea, you win. thanks for sharing. now do us a favor and go check you're tinfoil hat in the mirror to be sure it is sitting right and let the adults talk now.

thanks.

Or, Linux, if you are that worried.
Or, unplug your ethernet cable.

if you are that worried.

why worry just don't down load and install that 10 crap and worry's are gone no worries at all ? see with 7 you can decline and hide all of them or if one slips in just uninstall it

my 7 is worry free about anything to do with 10 so far but if your that lazy and uncaring maybe do as you suggest ??

my way avoids this type of thing and my 7 is still intact and works well

Monkey, those updates you listed, I am guessing some are just for windows 7, some just for windows 8.1, and some for both? FYI, I will upgrade to windows 10 just to get the key, and then revert back to 7 and avoid all those updates you listed. Some of those I already hid/uninstalled 😀

The issue with win 7 (and 8.1) mass updating is that some updates are dependant on having others already installed & unfortunately the automatic process is not intelligent enough to put them in a proper order.

The last time I had to fully update either from a clean install it took the best part of 2 days to do it manually.

No, I fixed it. Thank you for the help.

But I have another question somewhat related to this. What steps should I take before updating to windows 10? I will downgrade after, just doing it to get the key.

1. There is no 'key'. It is a digital entitlement. A hash of your Win 7 license and your motherboard info.
2. You are in uncharted territory, wanting to upgrade your Win 7 to Win 10 now, reverting back to Win 7, and maybe changing to Win 10 in the future.
This is new stuff...a new method of licensing and Upgrading from MS. How far into the future will you be able to go to Win 10 again on that same hardware? 30 days? 6 months? 2 years form now? Completely unknown.

I don't know, you don't know...no one outside of MS actually knows. And the MS drone you might get on the phone doesn't even know.

As for your question of what to do before Upgrading?
Run all the current updates.
Create a good image of the current C drive or partition, using whatever software you want.
Do the Upgrade to 10. See what happens.

^ I would assume that upgrading then downgrading would be entirely pointless, as USAFRet says there is no actual key unless you buy windows 10 in retail format as a freh install.
I would have assumed that downgrading again removes your system into from the servers & if you're not actually running win 10 on the deadline date your free upgrade option will be no more.
These are my personsl assumptions only but seem the most logical to me.

By all accounts upgrade if you want to try win 10 out & revert back if you really really don't like it but don't do it for the reasons youve stated.

Junkeymonkeys opinions on win 10 & Microsoft are becoming fairly legendary on these forums & while there is a tiny hint of truth in what he says he's absolutely overboard on most if his opinions.
Apple iOS & Google android OS are far far more guilty (& far more intrusive) of collecting anylitical data & have been for years.
This is the 21st century, if you want to be 'off the grid' as it were go & buy a cabin in the woods with no technology & live off the land ;-)

i have actually seen it suggested on other sites to upgrade and then downgrade to "reserve" your win 10 copy before the free update ends.

so i tried it just to see what would happen (on a pc i was upgrading to win 10 anyway). i upgraded, then did a fresh win 7 install to remove all traces of win 10 to see if it would activate and it did. for about a week. then i got the message saying my key was not valid and to enter a valid one. took a bit but eventually it caught up to the server checks and was rejected. so first test down and failed....

then i did another fresh install back to win 10 to see if it remembered it was activated before. it did remember and activated for me with no issue. been about a month now on that install and still activated with no problem.

MS said you'd get 30 days to revert back but clearly they decided to go back on that promise to fool more people into upgrading. if you want to upgrade, then do it and stop worrying about going back to win 7. there is no need. win 10 is a pretty good os once you figure out the subtleties like every other version of windows. if you want both, then you'll need a new key for one or the other to do it like MS intends to happen.

if you want win 7 then keep it and stop worrying about win 10. buy it later if you decide you want it. there really is no other option right now. you get one or the other unless you buy both.
