Windows 7 on 1 GIG of RAM?

Well, on my old machine Running a Core 2 Duo 1.8 Ghz processor,GS8400 graphics card and 1 GIG of DDR2 RAM with Windows XP (yeah I know,horribly outdated) ,would you recommend installing WIndows 7? Will passive RAM usage increase significantly? Thanks

No I wouldn't , doesn't even run well on 2gb.

I wouldn't recommend installing W7 on it. As it demands more resources from the PC to run properly, which you unfortunately don't have.
If you want to run a smooth OS on this machine you should probably look outside windows.

There are plenty of linux distros for slow machines.
Lubuntu for example, it's a great choice.

As you probably can't game on that pc, you should face no problems switching to linux.

4gb is about where it runs real smooth.

My old Alienware had 2 GB DDR2-800 RAM and it ran quite well. I'd recommend buying some new RAM (ideally, get a pair and discard the current) DDR2 goes for $6 a stick or something real cheap...

Depends, Skyrim runs at steady 27-30 with a bunch of mods on (no graphics mods obviously) Fallout New Vegas does a bit better than that. Now I have to run GTA on quite low settings but I get a playable 25 FPS..... Homefront on the other hand is a missmatch,depends,sometimes it would run at 2 fps,but with some tweaking (like reducing the number of processes in task manager to 16 lol,it works fine)

Apart from RAM requirements there's also the not insignificant matter of motherboard drivers.
If the mobo manufacturer or PC maker hasn't released any Win7 drivers for that model you're gonna have a devil of a time finding drivers that work.

2GB of RAM was fine a fine amount 4-5 years ago. Now the websites are more demanding and for safety purposes every modern browser create a separated process for each new tab. It's quite reasonable since 4 and 8 GB sticks are pretty affordable.
