Hello,

So I have been wandering, should I get windows 7 or windows 10? I don't really care for what windows 10 offers and I like how windows 7 looks like.

I also want to know, is downloading motherboard and graphics drivers the same in windows 10 as windows 7 and also can I have Microsoft security essentials and windows updates turned off?

Solution

I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10... If you want, I could give you a rundown of some of the issues I've encountered to help you make a better, informed decision.

First off.. the Windows 10 updates is a pain for the Home Version because it will auto install all your updates and the only way to stop it would be to either disable updates entirely or pay to upgrade to...
If you want to disable updates on windows 10 you need the Professional edition.
Jump onto the Windows 10 bandwagon as Windows 7 Main stream support has already ended, and extended support is to end in 2020.

windows 10 does have the same feel as windows 7 IMO. if you want to make the jump then get windows 10 andif you can find a copy of windows 7 for less then just buy that and then go for the free upgrade

you cannot disable updates in windows 10 pro only delay them for several months

Thank you for the reply. However, I am wandering can you have windows 7 updates off and still have Microsoft security essentials working?

I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10... If you want, I could give you a rundown of some of the issues I've encountered to help you make a better, informed decision.

First off.. the Windows 10 updates is a pain for the Home Version because it will auto install all your updates and the only way to stop it would be to either disable updates entirely or pay to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. There are also issues if you have a GPU or Sound Card installed because sometimes Win10 will install their version over yours. Microsoft released a tool you could install that will hide "some" driver updates so they don't auto install... so that helps.. and it allowed me to resolve the issue with my GPU driver.

Another issue involves DPI Scaling. I use a 32" display with my scaling set to 115%. To me that makes everything better. Windows 10 uses a different scaling engine than Win7 or Win8.1.. so if you use anything above 100%, text will come out slightly blurry. I read this was done to allow better scaling with tablets or phones.. but anyway, for some people it's noticeable... and it was driving me crazy. There is a fix.. someone posted a popular utility to forces Win10 to revert and use the scaling from Windows 8.1... clears everything up.

I did find an issue with using shortcut keys to open programs. It seems for some reason, there is like a 2-3 second delay before Windows 10 opens up a program. Why?? I have no clue.. so when I use my mouse button shortcut to open Outlook there is a slight delay... same thing when I press three keys on keyboard...

Another issue or bug people overlook is.. if you use Windows 7 Game Explorer to keep all the shortcut links to your Games... and do the upgrade to Windows 10... every game in that folder will be duplicated inside Windows 10 App Start menu area. Not bad if you have a small handful... but pain if you have a bunch of games.. and like to keep your computer organized.

Finally... the Tiles... what can I say. I can tell you from personal experience that those Live Tiles are almost worthless. None of the programs I have are compatible with them so you'll see a tiny generic icon in the middle of a colored square. The Live Tiles that come with Windows 10.. mostly don't work.. at least not on my computer. The Weather Tile ONLY WORKS if you use the default medium size... on my system.. if I resize it to large or wide.. it simply refuses to work... and it's the same with every single other Live Tile. When I resize.. it stops working...

If I haven't scared you away from Windows 10.. it seems ok. Some of my programs stopped working after the upgrade... but all I had to do was reinstall... One issue is.. you can't select the download location for the App Store. I use Drive E for all my downloads and prefer NOT to use my SSD to download anything too... I can't make that change in Windows 10.. the option is greyed out.

Oh, you also asked about Security Essentials. Windows 10 does not have that. You have to use Windows Defender, which is just ok. However, you can't turn that off unless you have something else installed... otherwise, if you try to disable it from settings... Windows will auto turn it on for you after about an hour.

Hope I answered your questions and gave you a better idea about Windows 10.

Yes you answers my question, thank you. But with Microsoft security essentials, I would like to know, if I were to turn off windows updates in windows 7 will Microsoft security essentials still work.

essentials will still work but it might not get updated as much. the best would be is to just set windows 7 to check for updates but don't let it download and install them. security essentials updates can still come threw windows updates or just check them in security essentials itself
