Hi. I have had this laptop for about 2 years and the windows is the one that came with the computer itself. Recently I had installed COD Black Ops 2 onto the computer which had suddenly stopped responding. I changed my system's clock (to 13 November 2012 6:30 am) to fix the problem with the game Everything went fine for a couple of days but when I fired up my laptop on the third day it told me that windows is not genuine. I googled it and I found somewhere that it can be caused by changing the system's clock (Note: I had disabled internet time :3). I corrected the time and rebooted but to no avail. I typed in the product key on the sticker on the laptop and I got a message telling me that this product key is not valid with this version of windows, please type a Windows 7 Professional product key. I tried reinstalling the licensing store but couldn't fix the problem. Please help ASAP as I am really annoyed by the messages telling me to activate windows. Thank you

P.S. About 3-4 months ago I had had the same problem out of the blue (no time changes) but then I hadn't waited to enter my product key I had just rebooted a couple of times (I was scared) and surprisingly the problem was fixed.

I did just that as soon as I got the message. Synced the time and date and rebooted a couple of times but to no avail. And I don't want to re-install or anything so...a solution that stays away from reinstalling will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the quick reply tho

Hi

If you run program such as nirsoft Produkey
or Belarc Advisor

you can see what product key is embedded in registry
It should be be one provided by laptop manufacturer (as part of OEM Windows)
not the one on the Windows label on the laptop.

Also consider using sytem restore points to roll back the registry before the time you changed the date/time.

if this fails Contact the laptop manufacturer technical support department to see if they know of a solution.

If all else fails you will have to back up then re install Windows either from the recovery partition or recovery disk set

Actually when I tried to re-install the licensing store (or whatever), it included disabling the security (the system restore and everything) and re-enabling it. Doing so resulted in the loss of recovery points. As for the programs, are they trusted? Thanks

UPDATE: I tried installing one of the programs you mentioned (nirsoft produkey) and it gave me a different key (an explanation will be appreciated). I tried to change the product key and activate windows but it gave me an error.
Error Code: 0x8007232B
Description: DNS name does not exist.

Help ASAP please. Thank you.

I cant choose the option 'other ways to activate'. 🙁

Hi

you need to find the telephone number for Microsoft Activation line in your country and get through to a support person and convince them you have a PC with factory installed Windows 7 pro

If that fails you will need to re install Windows from a recovery partition or recovery disk set

You asked about the Windows Product key not matching the label
OEM Manufacturers use a special version of oem Windows where all the PC's of the same model motherboard have the same Windows key, the stick on COA label does not have this key

Windows checks for motherboard stored (BIOS or DMI) identification to confirm the motherboard has not changed
Flashing the wrong BIOS could cause Windows to think the Motherboard has changed
eg if Dell uses a Intel motherboard it will identify as a Dell but you could use a Intel BIOS and overwrite the Dell identification.
