Ok, everytime i boot up my pc and click on my user profile and enter my password to log on like i have done a thousand times before i get logged onto a "public" account. where all my documents and files are gone, none of my personal settings remain. at first i panicked and thought it had all been deleted. i't definitely says my user name at the top of the windows start menu when i click it. yet it clearly isnt my account. it's the only account on my pc so i dont see how i have suddenly been put on a random one. if anyone can please tell me how i can log onto my personal account with all my settings on i'd greatl;y appreciate it. it's driving me nuts, all my applications are gone too, i cant use google chrome because all my bookmarks are gone. PLEASE send help. SOS.

If your profile has issues loading, Windows will log you on with a temporary account, which is what I am guessing you mean, no such thing as a "public" account.

Logon to a different account (create one if you need to ) with administrator rights, and look in the C:\Users directory for a directory with your user name, and look in the folders there to see if your documents and other info is there. If it is, you can copy them over to that new account you made.

thanks for the reply, i ended up doing what you said, although its a pain in the neck because all my bookmarks in google chrome have gone now, but at least i got all my personal documents back. i initially thought it was hdd failure because i've had it for a while now and it is failing slowly but surely. i just ordered parts for a completely new build and i'm getting 2x 2tb WD caviar blacks and a 500gb samsung ssd so hopefully wont have this problem again. once again i appreciate your input.
peace
