Windows 7 SP1 - Which file to download?

I would like to download the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 to patch my system.

1) Is this the correct Service Pack 1 installation file for Windows 7 Professional 64-bit?
Windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe

2) Do I need to download and install any of the other .Symbols files from the website?

3) I am installing a new PC with Windows 7 Professional RTM from the DVD. Can I install SP1 immediately after installing Windows 7, or do I need to do a Windows Update first?

If you have a 64 bit system to install, that will be the right pack to put in on top of it and the Pack will include many of the hotfixes and patches which have already come out so you can go straight to it as soon as the system can get online. Check for updates after the restart when you've installed the Pack and check again next Tuesday for the March MSRT.

Only two of that bewildering array of downloads are for Windows 7 - the MSDN developers usually get their own download and the Server 2008 versions will not run in your proposed system.

How in the world do you think your reply even remotely answers the question?!?!? The question was not "how", the question was "which". And by the way, when you say "it will make all the right decisions for you." - what decisions is it making for me??? I would prefer to be in control and understand what is going on, rather than allow software to blindly install on my computer.

Vague answer but but a good one. If you can't download the 903Mb file doing through windows update the file will be smaller and it will choose what it sees you need like security updates, specific random files and other such you don't need so it will take much less time.

I'm trying to solve the same problem. The machine in question is a newer Dell and it doesn't like the old version of Windows 7, so it won't connect to the network. Therefore, asking Windows to download directly is not a solution. Instead, I'm downloading the SP on a different computer and copying the files to the new Dell. Whether it is necessary to install SP1 prior to installing Dell Drivers is debatable, but this is what I'm trying to do.

The responses to this question may solve a different problem very well, but like the original poster, I would also be interested in how I would know which SP1 is the correct version for my system.

Hi, I'm trying to do the same thing. I have a Windows 7 64-bit Tower that I use in my recording studio that cannot connect to the net.
So I need to download to my laptop and transfer the SP1 files to my tower.

Can anyone please let me know which specific file(s) I need from the Microsoft Download Center?
I would think that this would be easy enough to find info on, but apparently not.

That would be correct to use Windows Updates for the best experience and choices are made for you. In my case though, Windows Updates is told to check for updates and it says that there are no new updates at all, but yet the system will remains at version 6.1.7600 and right click on Computer-Properties does not indicate Service Pack 1 being installed either. At this point it appears that to get Service Pack 1 installed without having to extract the .ISO and go at that approach would be to download the file manually. That's where if you are not sure then all the choices can be confusing. It just doesn't seem like the correct choice to download something that starts with Windows6.1-anything would be for Windows 7. Not confusing at all, wrong. Very confusing to the novice end user.
