Hello gurus,

I would like to share my experience that may help someone:

1. not to waste the time trying to Fix the TRIM problem with your SSD in Windows 7 in situation right below
2. to decide not to Clone Windows 7 from HDD to SSD at all if OS was installed on this HDD when it was in IDE (not AHCI) mode - to avoid future TRIM problem
3. to discover that regardless of widely known "fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify" gives "0" TRIM may not actually work even if SSD is OK with it.

1.5 years ago having lots of stuff installed, I cloned/moved my Windows 7 64bit from HDD to Plextor 256 M5S using Plextor's cloning software that I had with my another PRO series SSD. I did all what was necessary to make it bootable in AHCI mode, enabled TRIM in OS "fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0", got zero returned from the query above and having an impressive speed forgot all this kitchen. But with time the situation has changed: Shut Down - 80 seconds, opening network shares - 7-10 sec. ??? Installed Plextools - "TRIM OFF". "Hard Disk Sentinel" precisely told that TRIM is supported by SSD but Disabled in Operating System. I used the famous TRIMcheck (http://files.thecybershadow.net/trimcheck/) - "TRIM is not working". But "fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify" still says that it is enabled.
I spend hours in Google and found many complaints when people cannot make their TRIM work in Windows 7. I browsed dozens of pages and just in one discussion I found the hint (unfortunately I have lost this place and cannot refer to the author, keep searching) the expert mentioned "If you install Windows 7 on disk in IDE mode you will not have TRIM working for this installation". Looks like it is true. Means "Never" OR "nobody knows how".
My Windows 7 64 has been working for 5 years already and I have decided to reinstall as fresh directly on my SSD. TRIM is ON now immediately, means SSD was OK. Shutdown takes 8 sec. Network folders open in a blink of eye. So I can confirm now that without TRIM your SSD equipped system will slow down in a year or so.
Conclusion:
1. Do not use cloning from HDD to SSD if you have installed your Windows 7 on you HDD in IDE mode (default).
2. If you never did, check if your TRIM is really active (TRIMcheck) not relying on "fsutil behavior query "
3. Better do not clone at all if your Windows is more than 3 years old. Windows during installation sits on the SSD the best possible way. + This is really Best Practice (if heavily used) to reinstall it every 3 years - performance gain is very noticeable.

This may not be of any use to you... but the fastest & easiest way to activate TRIM in windows if you cloned from a mechanical drive is to simply run the Windows Performance Index (Game Explorer). It will test your system and if it finds an SSD... will turn TRIM on.

But yes.. it's always best to just take the extra time and perform a new/clean reinstall of Windows.
